If you filled out your FAFSA last night then you won't know how much financial aid you will get until your school gets your information. What makes you believe you were denied?

When I was in college I didn't qualify for subsidized loans, grants, or need-based scholarships. Yes, it sucks. Yes, there are other ways to pay! You have to make responsible choices and work hard, but it can be done. Here's what I recommend:

1. Don't panic about the cost of college. It's a lot of money, but you're investing it in your education, your personal development, a better career, a brighter future. Try not to be overwhelmed by the cost - take it term by term.

2. Choose options that are affordable for you. If this means starting (and finishing if you are seeking an associates!) at a community college, going to an in-state public school, living at home, selling your car... do it. You have to make sacrifices and know that you won't always get things your way right away. Give it time and be realistic!

3. Find funding. Work. A lot. Apply for scholarships. Go to fastweb. Fill out the FAFSA and even if you don't qualify for aid, you need to have completed the FAFSA for lots of scholarships. Go to a counselor at your high school (if you're in high school) or prospective college. Speak with a financial aid officer - it's their job to help you! You should still be able to get some unsubsidized loans if you don't qualify for other types of aid. Unsubsidized just means that you pay interest while you're in school and subsidized means that the government pays the interest for you while you're in school. It's better to get grants and scholarships before any type of loans, but loans are a great option too. Most people graduate with some debt - thanks to the loans! Don't be afraid, even if you end up with unsubsidized.

4. Work through school, too. I had three jobs at one time my entire sophomore year. Don't let work interfere with your ability to do well academically (otherwise why bother?), but work hard during summers, do well in classes the first time around (paying for class a second or third time around is a WASTE), and spend your money wisely. Establish a positive credit history so you can get better private loans.

5. Don't give up! Even if you have to go to school every other term or take a year off or go to your second choice of school because the first choice is too expensive - don't give up. If it's what you really want (because it's certainly what you deserve) don't give up. Make the best of your time in school and take it seriously, but don't lose touch with the value of the opportunities for learning, growth, and fun!

It's a bummer and it can really suck sometimes, but school is so worth it. It's one of the best things you can do for yourself.

:) Good luck!

If you used a FASFA form it's way too early to know whether or not you were denied. They usually don't tell students until July for the fall semester. Maybe you should consult the financial aid office at your school about this. There is always the option of student loans. Try to find one with an affordable rate and a decent payback period.
