Burns staked his campaign on blasting the Democratic legislative agenda and sought to tie Critz – in a relentless spree of TV ads – to Pelosi and Washington Democrats’ push for health care and cap-and trade climate legislation. His campaign sharply criticized Critz for holding a Washington fundraising event with Pelosi.

Critz, for his part, launched a wave of attacks over Burns’s record on jobs and accused Burns of supporting tax breaks for companies that ship jobs overseas.

Burns’s defeat marks the latest in a series of special election defeats for Republicans. Republicans have now lost seven consecutive special election races — three this cycle alone.

I don't disagree that he ran on local issues. That doesn't take away from the fact that he also ran against Obama. He distanced himself from the mainstream Dem party and that helped him.
