Democracy - Does it exist in the UK?

Democracy is majority rule and therefore obviously exists as the political party in government is voted into power by the majority. It's not a perfect way of doing things, just the best there is.

Well, in the UK we have the House of Lords which completely makes a mockery of democracy but I'm not sure genuine democracy exists anywhere in the world. I think the world is run by corporations not by politicians, democracy is just what they use to make us all feel like we have some power in this world, but it is quite clearly a cynical trick.

Democracy cannot exist along with a monarchy. You either have one or the other. A country that thinks it can is delusional. The appearance of the Queen at any time makes a mockery of basic fundamental notions of democracy.

Royal family nobody votes for
Vast division between the rich and the poor
People die of hunger and poverty in the UK while the Queen is the richest women in the world
We go to war against the wishes of the people
Lords in the house of commons vote on policy making and are corrupt yet nobody votes for them.
Should we have rich elitist public schools in a democracy?
You cannot become the prime minister unless you attend the right school which will be elitist and rich.
How can the boy from the council estate attain that?
We only have two real choice to vote for in the election and Conservatives and Labour are twins in the political world, is that democratic?
We cannot protest within two miles of Parliament now, freedom of speech is being denied, is that democratic?
CCTV cameras watching you everywhere and now some have microphones so they can watch and listen to you, is that democratic?

Don't believe the spin there is no such thing as democracy in the UK and never has been, more like a dictatorship.

In the 1930's the Communists in Glasgow were having mass demonstration and Downing street and sent the guns ships up the Clyde river to fire on it's own people!

Agree with Ben.
We need to become a republic if we ever want real democracy here in the UK.
Which bit of inequality does the monarchy not understand?

No I definatly think our democratic system works fairly well, I mean.. if you needed to you could write to your local AM or MP about something that was really bothering you - it's not as if we have no form of contact with our representatives, admittedly no direct action may be taken from your concerns, but at least we could start petitions etc.

It's democracy in a sense that we individually get to exercise our franchise every few years, however, in the interim between treks to the polls things are done in our name without our consent. We elect a government that governs in our name on a bunch of promises that are rarely fulfilled. Trying to get an honest answer from a politician in the UK is like trying to catch a greased pig. Paxman and Humfreys do their best but note how often the politician answers a question with another question that is irrelevant and then answers their own question. How often do they simply refuse to answer the question. Now we have the Cabinet Minutes from the Iraq era being withheld from us. Why? What do they have to hide? Why should Jack Straw, who was at the heart of the discussions be allowed to decide now what is released? How many politicians are in it for the money, the expenses or the graft?

No. We are the most spied upon, regulated county in the world...we even do what the Europeans tell us to do, which they don't abide by themselves.
Whats democratic about being taken into bankrupcy by the unelected Brown Jobbie?
