Degenerative Scoliosis and disc disease

My mother was diagnosed with Degenerative Scoliosis and disc disease. Dr. said not much they could do but control the pain. She has spurs all over her spine and no cushioning between discs. She has shrunk in the past year, he said this was normal with the disease. Has anyone had any experience with this disease? We are kind of blind as to what to expect other than the pain she has to live with.
