Defender the Magical Knight vs Call of the Haunted?

Okay, so I run spell counters (gasp, a theme of deck that hasn't had support for like 1-2 years. As you can imagine I don't win a lot of tourneys...)
Anyway in a just-for-fun duel with a friend, I had defender on the field (with a counter) and activated call of the haunted to bring back my magical marionette (a spell caster monster). All good till my next turn where my friend uses MST to kill call of the haunted and therefore my magical marionette.
tl;dr version: Defender w/ counter. Spell caster w/ call of the haunted. Call of haunted destroyed. Can I use defender's effect to prevent my caster (magical marionette) from being destroyed?
I'm just wondering if call of the haunted would continually destroy my caster in an endless loop (like a field spell vs a magical citadel w/ counters) or it just destroys once (and thus defender can sacrifice a counter to save him)
