I am trying to figure out how many people have been nominated for an Oscar that died after the movie was completed. And how many of these nominees ended up winning? A co-worker of mine thinks Heath Ledger just won because he died, not b/c he gave an incredible performance. Thanks!

Peter Finch was the only one who has won an oscar after he died (for an acting award) but others have been nominatedJames Dean was nominated for both Giant and Rebel Without a Cause after he died and I'm sure there are others; so you don't just automatically win because you are dead

There have been seven posthumous (after death) best actor oscar nominations including Heath Ledger. Only one other winner though...Peter Finch won in 1976 for his role in "Network"...so they don't just give oscars out because someone died.Heath Ledger was amazing in that role and is completely deserving of the win.

As far as the acting categories, there has only been one other posthumous winner, Peter Finch for Network. So it's probably safe to say he won it on merit.
