Debating apartment move-out costs?

My husband and I just moved out of an apartment complex and into a house. We just received the final statement of charges, stating that we owe a LOT more than we expected. Turns out they are charging us for replacing the entire carpet, when it would have been very cleanable (my son spilled a few food things on it, and my husband's grandma spilled iced tea on the living room area; nothing permanent). We didn't get the carpet cleaned because we'd just cleaned the one at the new house, and after paying a couple hundred dollars figured it wouldn't be worth it. (Obviously we were wrong.)

Also, because of scheduling conflicts, they walked the apartment when I wasn't there. They said something like "We'll come back later," and I said OK.

So my question is, is there a way to debate the cost of replacing the whole carpet? I have my word, my husband's, and my sister (who helped vacuum the entire thing) that it was very cleanable, but I don't know how far that will go.

How long did you live there? Sometimes even if they did have to replace it, if it was normal wear and tear, then it is their cost not yours. You only have to pay for the costs of abnormal wear and tear. I would think the most they can do it keep your deposit, not charge extra. Check your lease and see. The deposit is to cover all of the charges to revamp an apartment.
