DEBATE: smart clothes?

Ok, so this is probably aimed at the office workers....well mainly guys too. but... doesn't it annoy you that there is no alternative...well not really...to the suite? or shirt and tie? where as women can get away with pretty much anything when they say "dress code: smart".
like for instance...ya cant even not wear a tie

Maybe if you work in a pretty stuffy field or are in a customer facing role such as sales, but otherwise it's pretty normal to not wear a tie these days. As long as you don't turn up wearing T-shirt, jeans and trainers you should be OK.

look how many different colour ties you can get though and shirts theres so many different materiels and designs, my boyfriend is so smart he wears cardies and everything so there is variety cos he looks so much better than other men and everyone comments on his look

I think that most guys can look smart with out a suit or tie. Smart trousers and a nice shirt, or t-shirt, it should be smart dress, with a rule of no jeans and baggy t-shirts. I can see where you are coming from on this one though!

I'mADinnerJacket never wears a tie, and I think I heard on the radio one of the Speaker contenders(LibDem?) wasn't in a photo op.

Set a trend! Buck the trend! In 100 years schoolkids will look at ties in history class and think what a bunch of noodles we were - what's the purpose, unless you're Jon Snow?

Could be worse - you could be wearing a Christawful uniform like me, but it has crossed my mind that girls can do better peacock displays than men in offices - the girls of course may bewail the effort and expense required.

For men there is little that they can get away with in offices other than suits. This is mostly because not as many styles of clothing have been designed for men. You have to remember though that women have the harder task of deciding what to wear each day, and what will be acceptable and appropriate without the specific rules men get. We don't get "your skirt should be this style, your top shouldn't show more than X amount of cleavage" etc. We also have to put up with the sexy secretary stereotype and learing men when we dress smartly for office work.

Also, women are very competitive and bitchy- they are horrible to each other about what they wear which makes it even more difficult picking clothes in the morning before work!

So really, men get the better deal by not getting any choice :)
