Debate Over "Offensive" Song Lyrics - Please Help Me Fellow Atheists?

Hello,

I posted a status message on Facebook (haha). I need your help to come up with an arguement to defend the message. The status message were these lyrics by Nine Inch Nails, "I'll heal your wounds, I'll set you free, I'm Jesus F**k on ecstacy."

I got this reply from someone, "uh...that's an offending status, can u change it?" To which I replied, "Wait... Are you serious." To which they replied, "Yeah I'm serious." (Okay we're getting there, just hold tight.)

So this is what I had to say in defense of my freedom to status message, "I don't understand where you're coming from. I mean, these are just song lyrics. Should I censor artistic expression for the sake of religion or to please a religious audience? If I put up one of numerous quotes from the bible that supported closed-mindedness and hate, would that be okay? Because where do we draw the line?"


To this, they replied, "No, artistic expressions shouldn't have to please a religious audience. But it shouldn't have to offend it either. I think i'd draw the line where you start using people's beliefs in an inappropriate and thoughtless way. I don't know if you'd understand but referencing the main focus of my religion and then describing it the way the song does isn't... Read More exactly nice. People can have their opinions and express it in any way they want. But i think that peopel should actually consider others in that process."


Now, everything I have come up with is either offensive or would dig myself an even larger hole. Any ideas?

Wow, people can be so touchy. Say you have the free will to put whatever song lyrics you like up, and if they don't like them they can just ignore them. It's not like you were personally attacking them or anything. You didn't actually WRITE the lyrics, you were just quoting them. Sounds like this person needs to lighten up.

That is not art. Isn't ART meant to inspire and awe. This is just offensive and rude. And completly disregarding others feelings.

So, freedom of expression is acceptable, except when it offends this person? Okay. Since this person is now to be the standard for what is or isn't legitimate artistic expression, perhaps they would be kind enough to post their guidelines on the internet, so that we can all follow them. I'm so glad someone is finally going to put this into black and white terms so that all of humanity can finally agree on what is and isn't tasteful.

MrzBoopie is a nut but most of us know that. Religious people do get very offended over mockery of their religion, and the fanatical ones don't believe that anyone else is entitled to a view. I feel this particularly as a homosexual and having so many of them telling me I'm evil just because of how I was born.
