Debate on Drinking age?

In my class we had a debate on the drinking age wheither to lower it to 18 or not. We split up to which side we were on. I went to keep it the same.

The only point the ppl who wanted it lowered had was that ppl put their life on the line in the military...they should be able to drink.

1.) they CHOSE to put their life on the line. Plus-a girl brought up that a soldier needs alcohol to get through the horrific things he/she sees. I'm not saying their experience is a fairy tale...but couldn't that soldier create a drinking problem for themselves doing that?
2.) also think, we have rights...but some rights are given up to protect the rights of others. People say "no harm done in drinking" but what if they get drunk and drive? They are endangering the lives of those on the road.
3.) Ppl in the class also brought up "well people are doing it anyways illegally and it's hurting them" Number one their doing something illegal which should have a consquence and number two that's like saying "I think i'll give this robber all my fine jelewry so he doesn't break my windows breaking in" it doesn't make sense.

-i'd appreaciate lots of comments and remarks on what i say so i can form a better statement with less gaps :) these are just ideas i have in my head based on what i know.
Just to add-due to an answer that didn't quite answer my question-I am way under 21 and obviously am not a parent.
 
I'm sorry but have you ever heard of PROHIBITION? I believe with Barac Obama and the states' Gov.'s....The exact same thing will happen again.
 
The drinking age was 18 for a long time and I did not see any difference with how it is today. In many countries in Europe the drinking age is 18 or even younger and they don't have as many problems with drunk drinking as we have. The problems have nothing to do with the drinking age.
 
Hello Dani, this is Dani ;) I think that the drinking age should be the same. I think that comparing the issue to the military is somewhat ridiculous. That is a whole other topic that doesn't fully relate to the age of drinking.

Let's face it, the age 18 is in the immature, TEEN years. Although there are many mature teenagers, there are just as many immature and irresponsible teens. There are many factors that apply to the responsibility of teenagers such as learning how to drive, which relates to drinking and driving, and even the harm done to their body at such a young age.

The idea that people who choose to enroll themselves into the military at 18 need alcohol to get through the experience is simply ridiculous.

The law of the drinking age is to protect. The ones who do drink illegally are going to pay the consequences because that law is trying to protect them, and when it is broken, those people are punished to teach them a lesson.
 
I'm with JL, i dont want to see kids throw their lives away with alcohol. if i had it my way, then it would be illegal all over the world. i hate it with my guts and do not support drinking at all... ever... never... >: (
 
anyone whos old enough to:
vote
join the military
buy and own a long gun or handgun depending on state
sign contracts whether business or residential
watch porn sites and join them most of them
go to strip clubs or work at one depending on state
have consensual sex with anyone 18 or above
live on your own
buy tobacoo products
gamble in some casinos
(and dats anyone 18 or over)
should also be able to drink. so i say lower it to 18
