That we should restrict soocial networking sites to over 18's.
i would like to know the pros and cons.
this is for my school debate

pros:

1. young people are aware of the reality of the world they are living in, especially if they live very sheltered lives with overprotective parents.
This expands their horizons and view of the world.

2. young people have the opportunity to meet people out of their social circle and lives. These opportunities are only provided online, because a school student will probably only meet students (people like him) while the internet provides a whole world out there.

Cons:

1. meeting new people who hae ulterior motives. This includes:

a) being exposed to sexually permissive people (that's probably the majority of the people who do social networking).
b) being exposed to people who are wearing 'masks' behind the internet, posing danger to the child.

2. the young student spends too much time behind the screen, and little time is left for real interaction between real people. This has a detrimental effect on his social life , family life etc.

3. being exposed to the 'ugly' world too early. basically, growing up too early.

Its Ideal but not necessary.

I say its Ideal because then it takes the whole age issue away from older people.

I can put it to you like this... when you are 17 and you see a 17 year old girl's picture looking hot and being suggestive its one thing, but when shes a friend of your friend in their top 8 and you see it but now you are like 21 and she is 17, it has the same effect but you feel akward about it because you know you have to repress any sort of feeling you have about that because of the 4 year difference overlapping the legal age of sexual consent thing and its all wierd to go through all the calculations of it even. Ok, that said, it keeps getting worse as you get older. plus I BET some of the guys are not strong enough to repress all that and send a message to them and then its all downhill from there. If the original temptation wasnt there to begin with would he be where he is???

ok but on the flip side of that one facet of the argument then you could say, but having that temptation there could be an easy way to find potential child molesters and the like. ...a very risky way, but effective none the less, look what they did with chatrooms and that to catch a predator show. this is an interesting argument. I doubt they could keep kids off of it anyway though, myspace is pretty addictive.
