Removed from Grindhouse and watched as a separate entity, this film is very good. All the characters are well rounded and Kurt Russell puts in a good performance!

I'm afraid my equivalent thread for this would be titled "Deathproof - overrated dud". It may have been better in its shorter format but its long version is a struggle to get through. A lot of not very interesting dialogue, limited plot, novelty film scratching & damage that disappears about halfway through. I don't think I've ever seen a more restless cinema audience as the one who suffered through it with me on its initial release.

On a positive note, the main crash was impressive and Mary Elizabeth Winstead looked nice;)

To be honest, I don't think I've ever forgiven Tarantino for the hackjob he did with additional dialogue on "Crimson Tide". His contribution was to add embarassing, ill-fitting pop culture references that brought down the tone of what was one of the more intelligent action films of the nineties.

No wonder Denzel decked him on the set!

The car bits were great and it was well made but it was far to boring, way too much talking, I did not think it was terrible just very disappointing. Less talk and more action would have been better.
Plant terror was much much better in my opinion.

Awful, awful film. I was actually willing Kurt to kill those foul mouthed tarts just to stop them droning on & on and that's surely not the point. When he blubbed in the end I realised I was justified in my hatred.

Deathproof is a a drag, why the hell didnt you do a post hailing 'Planet Of Terror'????
That film is a CLASSIC. Rose Byrne with a machine gun leg! Zombies! soft core interlude! Fergie getting jumped on by flesh eaters!! Tarantino's gigantic puss-filled cock exploding!
A helicopter using its blades to mow down zombies! Lesbian sub-plot drama! Its an instant classique!:D

Theres elements to it that are gr8. I wished that the first set of girls didnt get killed so early on, as I was just getting into their characterisation. Its editing could've been tighter, but then, thats what tarantino was going for, something akin to an overlong 70's b-movie!

ok, firstly, I seldom reply to posts where the OP state 'discuss!!!' but since this topic happens to be about one of my all time favourite films, I'll let that one slide. :p

Death Proof is the perfect Saturday night film, from the fantastically camp opening of girl clutching her crotch because she neeRAB 'to pee' to the equally fantastically camp ending of Rosario Dawson's visual rendition of 'These Boots Were Made For Walking'.

Kurt Russell's Stuntman Mike verges on panto villain but in this trashy context that works for me and Zoe Ball's speeding-car hoping antics are just astounding and that crash scene half way through is just gore city.

I just adored this film, a great homage to 70's trash films.

One thing that I never understood though was why the critics turned on it, I've never seen them U-turn on a film like that before.

Got my blu-ray edition this morning, so I look forward to seeing it in it's original, un-padded out, double bill format.
It'll be interesting to hear people's opinions on the film once they've seen it in it's intended cut, I hope it brings a reappraisal.

I thought the dialogue seemed a little contrived. Maybe i don't mix in the right circles, but i've never heard young women speak that way. I think that QT thought that he is famed for his quirky dialogue, and wrote it anyway, irrespective of who was saying it. Didn't quite ring true for me.

yep, Zoe Bell was great but perhaps not as great as ex-children's presenter Zoe Ball's speeding-car hoping antics that I mention in my post. :o

i have both deathproof and planet terror, bought seperate on dvd .....

DP has a major problem in it's extented version, it's far too BORING ..... it's probably MUCH better in it's shortened "grindhouse" version (ala taking all the boring bits out)

PT is almost the opposite ..... it's almost PERFECT in it's extended version, and could even be extended more and would be as excellent!!

tarrentino kinda forgets about the "grindhouse" effect halfway through DP, and enRAB up as a normal chase movie, while PT's "grindhouse" effect is almost like a character in itself!!!! (see the opening sequence) and is just constant through the movie!
