Death Note US Remake being written

Yeah, well, don't come crying to people who know better when a work of pure art known as Death Note is bastardized as a lame-ass remake, which has happened to so many manga/anime made into live action films over the past decade. Especially if it makes big bucks not because it's a good movie, but because of all the immature fangirls who flocked to see it because it had a young hearthrob type in the role of Light, not because they want to see such an interesting story (and would normally dismiss a manga or anime as trash) - making the producers confident to make anoter cheapquel.

Besides, weren't the Japanese live action films adapted from the manga? There was no anime to adapt, and look how they turned out.
 
I'm getting tired of this sort of tone. Cease this pretense that you are among "people who know better" whereas the rest are not. It isn't productive for this thread, and it also happens to not be the case. You are another meraber speculating about the movie, no more and no less. That aside, you are making these assumptions:

1. Death Note can only be "bastardized" if put to film. Says who? This isn't even like DB Evolution where we can point to screenshots, interviews, and bad reviews to make a reasoned judgment that an upcoming film will be terrible. If you can't even allow for the possibility that this might turn out well, I don't know what you're doing in this thread aside from picking a fight. Then we're not talking about it anymore, we're just fighting.
2. Once again, there's this idea that the only reason to cast Zac is to attract hordes of fangirls, which we are meant to believe are mindless cretins because...well, I don't really know why. Can we just leave HSM out of this? I haven't even seen it, but I don't have to. Since when should one role typecast an actor for the rest of his life? If you don't think that's fair, exactly how long should that go on? Is there some point in the future where he's allowed to be in a good movie? I'd really like to see you answer the real point, which is that an actor playing Light should be able to play an innocent character that no one would realistically suspect of being a murderer. That would be both effective and most importantly true to the comic. If the guy who gets the role isn't Zac, I think it should be someone like him.

By the way, Death Note already has its share of fangirls. There are people that latch onto Light or L for whatever reason. So, I really don't know what sort of sanctity you think you're defending here. Not that I think anything is actually defiled by this in the first place--sometimes people like the same series for different reasons. Whatever those may be, if I think a work is great or even a "work of art," I'm sure not going to change my opinion of that because there are people who think about it differently than I do.

Hollywood Death Note may not turn out as arthouse material, but that doesn't mean a reasonably good job can't be done with it. So if you have concerns go on arguing them, but your position isn't the only reasonable one to take.
 
Quite serious. My craptacular brand of sarcasm would do little to help the discussion. The argument made that he has the perfect 'You'd never suspect him' air to pull off Kira and the relavent acting chops (plus key big name appeal) makes me, a guy who hasn't even read/watched Death Note, see the sense.
 
.......so what?, if having Zack be Light will bring in lots and lots of people, then that's a good thing no matter what their reason for coming to see it is, besides, hes a good actor, good enough for me.
 
Transformers has a bigger fan base in NA than death Note and otakus tend to be harder to please, all the otakus who don't like dubs won't care of they get the dub actors for this or not.

I'm not so sure the 80s toon hardcore fans are that bigger a group. If they're putting names in for L, Light, Soichiro, etc... I can totally see a fan bonus in Ryuk having the dub voice.
 
Well, then, they'd better do a good job with this.

Unless they subscribe to the philosophy that big-name heartthrobs mean big bucks, in which case they can bastardize it as bad as they want, and the same fangirls that cause other badly written movies with big name heartthrobs to make big bucks will cause this to make 'em.

How can you know for sure his work is subpar when nobody has seen it?

We're talking about the WB here. This is the same people who put out 'The Dark Knight.'

Moreover, Death Note is a fantasy piece, and big name movies that involved fantastic aspects from different cultures and religions come out all the time. 'Harry Potter' certainly wasn't too "liberal" for WB to put out. 'The Invention of Lying' is a very pro-atheist movie - also put out by the WB.

Clearly the boys at Warner Bros aren't afraid to ruffle some feathers in Nashville.

First of all, if you are going to write a fake script, you don't claim that you wrote it.
That kind of defeats the purpose of the prank.

Why do people do that sort of prank?
I don't know, but I do know that fake scripts pop up all the time, never to be claimed by anyone.

Besides, it has been a while since this "script" leaked, and I have not seen one reliable source claim that it was real - and I've seen no popular source even acknowledge the event.



First of all, why would you want to talk to someone who no longer owns the rights, and clearly wants nothing to do with the project? But more importantly - why do you think he sold it to the WB?

Because he doesn't want to make it - duh!

Obviously the WB does want to make it, and that is why they bought it.
And seeing that they bought it away from this guy, why should we suspect that they are of the same philosophy?

That movie was put out by FOX, not WB.
FOX sucks - we already knew that.
WB, however, has usually been putting out some good stuff lately.

Now, I'm not saying that the Death Note movie will be good. It very well could be bad. But there is no way for us to know at this point.

So why are we getting so worked up about it?

You are asking us to call people and complain about a fake script.
You are asking us to help fire two people (the Parlapanides brothers) based on nothing but speculation - and bad speculation at that.

Excuse me for finding the idea of trying to have a person fired from the job, when they haven't done anything wrong (that we can so far tell) morally wrong.

I'm not trying to fire anyone, just giving my opinion, and hope they change the script, maybe you should stop attacking me, this script was online months before i started posting, and weeks before ppl were downloading it

He never owned the right's he owned the right to sell, it and he stayed on as exective producer for the movie, you clearly are a person sammy that doesn't understand how hollywood works

Man, admit defeat, Sam's got some good arguments against what you've been doing. I'm taking Sam's side here, your arguments are no more credible than they were at IMDB, and if this truly is what you've been making it out to be, you'd think it'd get some more, y'know, mainstream attention from Wikipedia, Anime News Network, etc. :P

Also, again, I'll say the reason I'm so opposed to the idea of Zac Efron as Light - I just find him a bit annoying for the role. But if he can get his act together, and be a bit more fit for serious roles, then cool.

Back to topic - this supposed script is far too unrealistic. So much so, in fact, that I doubt it's actual WB written property, and that this script is just fabrication. Perhaps it's just me, but aren't even fake WB scripts more realistic than this?

I don't understand much about Hollywood because my degrees are in history and religious studies - id est, learning how to spot bull crap when I see it.
So even though I don't understand much about Hollywood, I do have a good understanding of logic and critical reasoning... not to mention basic grammar.

It doesn't take a Hollywood insider to see this script is a fake.

If you discover that I am wrong about this during your investigations, feel free to call me a moron in this article that you are writing.

That movie was good.



I don't have a problem with Efron.
I saw bits of his work in some movie with Mathew Perry, and although the movie wasn't very good, I thought his acting was fine.
Though I did not see High School Musical, so maybe that's why other people don't like him for Light, whereas I am neutral on the subject.

But seeing that a lot of people seem to not like him for the role, perhaps he isn't the right man to play Light after all.
