Death Note US Remake being written

With the exception of the musical thing, yeah, he kinda is. Like I said, Light Yagami, in the eyes of the public, is the golden boy, making his role as Kira all the more... uneasing, I suppose.

Zac Efron is an actor. An actor who looks a lot like Light Yagami and, for all intents and purposes, is fit for the job. Sir Ian McKellen is known for his work with Shakespeare, but that doesn't mean he didn't make a good Gandalf or Magneto. He's an actor, and a good one - though I can't speak for Mr. Efron's talent personally, like I said, I'm willing to give him benefit of the doubt. He's trying to avoid being typecast as "that High School Musical Kid" and wants to get into more serious roles - so pick him up for Death Note. How bad can it be?
 
From what I read, a lot of what made the original so worth any merit isn't really present within this script, though. To change anything back now would require a pretty extensive restructing of the script.
 
It's as right as it would be to cast Johnny Depp as L, that's what it is.

And if this whole project ever becomes anything official, I'll be glad to attend boycott protests.
 
I actually want Efron to be cast as Light, if only because the reaction on the internet will be hilarious.

I also hope they keep some of the names. Light? Quillsh Wammy? Restor? That is gold, right there.
 
Hmm. As loose adaptations goes, it's watchable. Fans would want more, but will most likey enjoy it, and those who never heard of the manga will find it enjoyable, and maybe check out the real deal. With movies these days, this is all you can ask for.
 
I figure the only way they could end on a single film is in two ways

1. New storyline and ending-Cut the character development to a very low minimum, erase the second half (Or somehow mix it in by having three detectives which would be insane), and make a new ending leading up to Light's death since there is absolutely no way a Death Note film can have a definite conclusion and not have Light dead at the end unless they change the Death Note's rules. Then create a new story using the core characters. Alas, this would lose lot of characters, most likely half or more, and plotlines would be removed to make a concise (or stupid and un-concise ) story ending.

2. The exact opposite-In other worRAB, make an arabiguous ending. Again this would involve rewriting the story but not to the extent of removing plot lines and characters (Though a few would still need to go). Then end it with Light either sitting atop godhood, L and him still going head to head or something like "We never saw Light again after that...." leaving his fate open. Basically, be like every other anime/manga that never gets a legitimate conclusion

Yeah, I'd want it to be a multi-parter only if it's written well. If it isn't, it can just burn off in the box office for all I care.
 
No, I hate his HSM movies, but I think that everything else he was in was pretty good. As an actor, I think he's got the skills. Really, the problem would just be in the writing.

Really, we have to look at these people's acting, not just their careers (I don't see Shia's role in "Even Stevens" stopping his rise to stardom)

You know, it may not suck. I mean, its not like DBE when we first heard th "Goku in high school" plot, we knew it was going to suck. At least let's get the plot out first.

Yeah see, if this was the plot, then I would probably not have high hopes for it at all.
 
It really depenRAB on what kind of vision they end up with for this thing. I understand that the first Death Note live action movie covers 12 episodes, and that clocked in at two hours. Now I haven't seen it at all so I'm not sure what that really says, maybe it wasn't paced that well. But it does seem clear that adapting the entire story into one movie would be a challenge.

The trick, I think, would be to find a point in the story where you could end a movie and have it feel pretty complete, while also suggesting pretty strongly that there's more to come.

I think what I would do is choose this part.......

.......the part where Light gets rid of the Death Note and loses all memory of his actions as Kira. The movie would end with the suggestion that L has won a half-victory with Light getting away with murder but no longer killing. But there would also be a haunting hint at the end that it's all a part of a plan of Light's to erase all suspicion of his guilt so that he can continue. This could be done through Ryuk, since Light would be acting innocent and thus be unable to close the movie with anything sinister.

The goal would basically be to end the movie with a new viewer getting conflicting messages. Is everything all right now, or is Light in the process of fooling everyone? You could even add to the arabiguity by writing in some doubt on Light's part soon before he gives up the notebook.

This way, even if nothing else is made, you're playing a clever mind trick on the audience that's open to interpretation. And at least a few will probably go buy the comic to discover how things work out. And if a second movie is approved, great, they can go back and adapt the rest.

It would be tricky to pull off well, no question...but possible if they know what they are doing. No trilogy required either.
 
A Death Note horror movie? They should just follow me around with a camera when I go online and have to see people raving about it and shoving spoilers in my face, to the point that even if I did want to watch it every plot twist has been systematically ruined for me because fanboys and fangirls are selfish.

I thought Michael Caine could maybe do as Watari, and for some reason, the image of Alfred Molina as Soichiro keeps swimming to mind.
 
You're so biased. Light's always been a pretty boy, and Death Note would be a terrific film. The Japanese live-action movies were awful, but the manga's story is well-written enough to be a film. Aside from that, the writers are adapting straight from the manga--not the anime or the other films.
 
This forum has become ridiculously lax on spoilers, ESPECIALLY for Death Note. I've lost track of how many times I've innocently gone into a thread here and BAM! Death Note spoilers. It's a horrible mob mentality; because alot of people HAVE seen it, it's treated as fair game with no respect for those who haven't. I would actually read the manga or watch the show if not for the fact that all the plot twists have been ruined for me. And with all of those gone, why even bother reading such a series? Thanks alot, guys.
 
Its not really good PR, because casting someone famous for these roles will get more PR and will appeal more to the general audience than the dub actors, who may appeal to a few otakus.



Oh why? Really now is Death note as hard to be on screen as DBZ? No, so what's the problem.
