Death Note US Remake being written

Matsuda = Matt (I'm not sure if Matsuda is his first name or last name. Same goes for the other investigators, but I guess I'll just assume it's his first name)

Misa = Mimi
Ryuk = Ryuk
Rem = Rem

No, I just haven't seen them. Nor do I ever intend to. But I've read in some places that Efron seems like the only one in the main cast with a real future in acting, so, I just made a guess at his quality.



Really? I thought the anime came before it...

...but either way, the manga was first, so, you know, his point stanRAB and all that, I guess.
 
Saying Death Note is not violent is like saying a it's legal for a doctor to practice without a liscense. Just because no weapon is used doesn't mean anything. The intent to kill alone conveys its violence. Would you feel the same way if it was poison that was killing a mass group of people?



Music and Videogames are always blamed when kiRAB murder, and kiRAB were suspended from school all over the world for creating Death Notes. There will be controversy either way.
 
You know, this adaptation could actually work, only because compared to the other popular animes, it's A) more realistic and B) it's not an action based shonen, so american directors don't have too try to hard, and just make a developing noir detective film with supernatural killings. It could be like SVU or something.

The only way Hollywood can mess this up is if they lie in the trailers. Death Note isn't (intenionally) funny, and Death Note had only one hand to hand match; IF Hollywood tries to even subtly pull this movie as different from the source, it will fail.

Now for the cast, I have two who could be Misa and Matsuda:

Reese Witherspoon: Give her the Legally Blonde Persona, long vibrant hair, and no brain, and you have the best portrayal of Misa right there. Couldn't find any good pic comparisons for them, but for Matsuda-





Jamie Kennedy in all his enthusiam would be a great Matsuda.

The last thing is, as long as the movie is just called "Death Note" it'll be good. You add "The Movie" or "Evolution" or any of that crap, the film will lose any possible seriousness.
 
That doesn't matter in the least, especially since we're talking about an anime and not real life. If you watch an anime with a character that's a carbon copy of Light, but uses poison to kill, would you say his method is more violent, though he pretty much kills without throwing a punch, just like Light?
 
I think the investigation team would be renamed based on the actors cast, having a multicultural group.

Rating-wise, I think the theme leans into 'R' terrain. Thinking of all the outcry over Showtime's Dexter airing on network... Dexter covers similar ground, although it sounRAB like Dex kills in person and investigates the potential criminal too.
 
Huh. While I can't say I was expecting it, Death Note is one of those series that has to potential to work very well as a western adaptation. As has been said, it's more realistic--Shinigami excluded, and CGI can do amazing things these days--than many series so wouldn't look strange adapted in this manner. I'm definitely intrigued.
 
Just because he gave up the death note at the end? That means nothing. If Light(er...Luke) and L are both still alive they can easily do a sequel, especially when a lot of characters haven't been introduced yet. They could start the sequel with Ryuk coming to Light and asking him why he's stopped killing or perhaps they can start it with Misa at the TV station.

And of course there hasn't been word of a sequel. The first movie hasn't even started filming yet. Usually they wait to see if a movie makes enough money before determining whether to make a sequel. Or at least, that's the way they used to do it. For some reason Hollywood seems to greenlight sequels for no good reason nowadays.
 
I wonder who could play L? I actually think they should get a relatively unknown actor to play him. It would seem right for some reason.

Also what about Aizawa? I suppose they could get a black dude to play him, but if not the afro thing will just look odd.

Of course it doesn't have to be the exact same, he just wouldn't look as cool.
 
Unless they change the rules, don't you lose your memory when you give up possession of the note? So wouldn't that make no sense for Ryuk to come back?

Also, why would Ryuk care? That's not in his personality
Yeah, but your post before was under the assumption that they would make sequels and right now, we should focus only on the one movie in front of us.
 
That still doesn't mean America isn't going to completely destroy it like it did to so many remakes of imported materials in the past.
