i gave them a chance to clear the air on the leaked script, to prove or disprove it

they said

"no comment at this time"


I'm scared guys, law abiding citizen should have been the U.S Death Note movie
 
I don't have a problem with the college student thing. In fact, I like it better.
It works better having him as a senior; he will be living on his own, his schedule will be unique (so L can figure it out), et cetera.

I also do not have a problem with the name change.
You're not gonna name him Light. This is mainstream, and Light sounRAB weird.
Granted, I'm not a fan of Luke, as it reminRAB me of Luke from Star Wars, but I'm not greatly opposed to it either.

I do have some major issues with the script, however, if we are assuming that it is real.
 
Some critics liked Speed Racer. A few of them thought it was on the verge of scratching a new type of cinematic form. I don't really agree, but I thought it was definitely interesting visually, and not at all deserving of "worst film of 2008" status.

That said, I do sympathize with some people here automatically moaning about Hollywood trying to milk another well-established comic book/manga/anime franchise. It seems like Hollywood is unable to create their own franchises anymore.

(Although I now think Dragon Ball Evolution was a complete waste of time. If they made it for the money they could have promoted it better, or released it in more theatres. What's the point of spending money on something if you're determined to make it fail anyway? This is why the economy is so bad, we have people like this wasting time and money)
 
I think I had Death Note #1 on my list of easiest to adapt to a western movie/tv show list when we had a thread way back when.

I think others like Beck and Nana could be adapted pretty easily as well. I'd put Monster on the list, but everyone would just say you were ripping off the fugitive.
 
I have a feeling it was a real leak and they are well aware of it, but they don't want to either confirm nor deny it. That's typically how companies handle this type of thing.
 
I like that idea.
Ending with the first Sakura TV fiasco would be the best way to end the first film. It gives plenty of time to introduce Light and the Death Note, and L and the task force and what not. Plus it would end the film on some awesome action. Then the second film could cover the Yotsuba storyline as well as the "Fake Kira" story and end with Mello and Near asking "What is it Roger?"

Yeah Death Note could work really well as a trilogy.
 
You know, since some people are concerned about how they would handle the Shinigamis and whether Americans would understand them, I'm wondering if they actually need the Shinigamis in the first movie? I mean, think about it. Ryuk really doesn't do anything in the first 20 episodes of the series. After he drops the death note, he pretty much just observes until the part where Light gives up the death note and loses his memory. It would be possible to rewrite the story so that Light doesn't even meet Ryuk until the second movie. Light could just kill on his own without Ryuk's help and then in the second movie Ryuk would offer Light the eye deal and explain that he's been observing him from the shinigami realm ever since he picked up the death note.
 
America seems to like CGI is just about everything, these days.

Anyways, I'm hoping that a U.S. live-action adaption of this movie will turn out to be good. Unlike the upcoming live-action Dragonball movie, I actually have hope for this movie to potentially be able achieve a status greater than "so bad, its good."
 
The problem here, is that Ryuk is needed as a plot device for Light to explain his plans to. Sure, you can use internal monologues, but not for the whole film. And Ryuk is actually a character with good appeal rather than a liability, he is the person who keeps Light grounded; someone who Light knows can kill him at any time, who he couldn't get rid of.

Removing Ryuk early on would be a slippery slope leading to excessive rewrites. You don't need to "understand" him, he is just a supernatural creature like Jason from Friday the 13th. The mystery is part of Ryuk's appeal. And don't forget the Apple jokes.

I'm pretty sure murder is illegal everywhere and it's not like you really need to know anything about Shinigamis beforehand. They pretty much tell you everything you need to know about Shinigamis.
 
You know, I remeraber when I first started watching Death Note, I was kind of surprised by how quickly they revealed Ryuk and the explanation of where the death note came from. I mean, most American TV series would have dragged that out. I mean, it took Lost about 3 seasons to explain any of the supernatural occurrences. Losing Ryuk would actually make the death note a little more mysterious. Ryuk might be better saved for the sequel. Besides, the comedy could easily be screwed up in a live action movie.



This is only the first movie, though. Why go all out like that when you can save some for the sequel?



The anime puts a lot of the blame on the death note, too. Light's father constantly tells Light that having the ability to kill anyone at will would be a curse that would destroy one's soul. At the beginning of the series, Light seems to be a rather normal teenager. If he didn't find the death note, he probably would have lived a normal, happy life and done a lot of good for the world. To be honest, I thought that Light went crazy a little too early in the anime. I would rather see a gradual change in Light's personality. Like, in the first movie he's just an avenger, but by the second movie he's starting to go over the edge, and by the third he's completely insane.
