Death Note movie question.

Not very violent, and not a lot of language, but the general concept makes it seem like a bad choice for most people under at least 12.

Well, its based off of the original Death Note manga, which ran in weekly Shounen Jump, and IS technically a Shounen series, meaning that someone had to have at least considered it to be kid-friendly enough to run in a Shounen Magazine. But, then again, there are a ton of shounen series out there, which are "technically" considered to be shounen, but really don't feel like they should be running in shounen magazines, at all.

At any rate, I wouldn't say that Death Note is very kid-friendly at all, myself, but in all honesty, I just found the movie to have such cheesy and over-the-top acting, that I really couldn't take it seriously enough to really call it "mature," either.

Cheesy acting or not, the entire concept of the series is predicated around mass murder. Similarly to "Boondock Saints", not something that I'd recommend for the under-15 crowd.

Shounen Jump aims at readers ages 10-18. I can assure you Death Note was aimed at the older portion of that demographic.

Most Shonen Jump anime are toned down a bit to be more kid-friendly, but not so with Death Note.

Usually, though, if something's demographic is closer to that of a 17 to 18 year old, it would wind up in a Seinen magazine.

And with Shounen Jump, while it does have its older demographic, it still has to keep all of its series kid-friendly enough to the point in which there is only so much that an SJ series can show, content-wise. For example, blood is fine, but SJ would never allow a series to show excessive amounts of gore, or sex scenes, or anything like that. Some shounen series like Death Note do have more mature themes, though, but even then, they have to follow certain restrictions that let them be placed in a Shounen Magazine in the first place, otherwise Shounen Jump wouldn't serialize those types of series. For example, in Death Note, I can guarentee you that:

Shounen Jump wouldn't have let Light, the villain of the series (despite being the main character), win at the end, even if that's what the author wanted, since it would probably bring up some controversy of the series having bad influences on children who read it, since lots of younger kiRAB buy Shounen Jump magazines, and therefore have access to reading ALL of the series that are published in those issues, including the more mature ones.

Hold on, before the thread gets locked, could someone remind me what day the movie comes out? I know it's two days only, so I don't want to miss it.

I say it all comes down to how mature you or the person going to see it is. I mean I've seen a 13 year old handle things better than a 16 year old, so it just depenRAB on that person, and how they were raised. It's like a video game, an M rated game stanRAB for Mature, and while it cannot be bought by anyone under 17, Mature depenRAB on the person itself.
