I'm trying to deal with my outright terror of gallbladder surgery. It's on Wednesday.

I'm 45 years old, have diabetes, and a history of atrial fib. I've been under the knife before. A c-section and a tubal ligation. I woke up from the tubal not knowing where I was and freaking out. It still scares me now and I don't want to go through that again.

The other thing is my other health issues. That scares me, too. I worry my a-fib will return. I'm also frightened of going to sleep and never waking up.

I know this is silly of me. There is no reason to worry when it comes to something as simple as a gallbladder. It's stressing me out and I need to find ways to relax beforehand.

Any advice would be great. Thanks

It is not silly to be afraid. Many people become anxiety-ridden before surgery. It is a big deal. If you had someone to voice your fears to that would be able to listen and reassure you that would really help. What I know is that you will do so much better in surgery if you go in with a glad heart. What I mean is you really need a postitive attitude. Those that have a more positive attitude going into surgery do a lot better. Don't forget, the hospital personnel are all professionals and have no doubt come across even more serious cases than yours. They do give some anti-anxiety medicine before surgery also. I hope you have someone who will go with you and hold your hand. Please feel free to voice any other fears you have and myself or another will answer you. Sincerely, searchin

Thanks.

My husband is going with me. He knows I'm anxious, but I haven't told him why. I'm afraid it will worry him.

Of all people to trust right now it would be your husband and the anesthesiologist! :) Did any of what I said help at all? I am sure your doctor's nurse would be happy to talk with you as well. Just give the office a call. You could benefit from some deep breathing to help with your anxiety. I know you will be glad when this is all over with!! Sincerely, searchin

Yes, what you said made a huge difference. I feel more relaxed now.

Also, if I am nervous on Wednesday, I'll make sure the hospital staff knows.

I will be very relieved when this is over.

Thank you very much for the assurances!
