I've heard some people say that acid reflux can irritate your throat and especially esophagus, so even after you deal with the cause (acid) by using PPI's or H2's, the actual irritation can take several months to heal, especially since food is going down through it all the time and re-irritating it.

Has anyone found a way to treat this irritation, or better yet, help it to heal faster?

I would like to know if anyone has found a way to help heal irritations faster as well.

I have a irritation or something in my throat on the right side. I feel it when I clear my throat, sometimes when talking, and haven't been able to eat for 2 weeks because of it. I have had a endo done a few months ago but this was before I was feeling this and they found moderate esophagitus. I have very thick and glue like mucus that comes up when I cough some times. When I am able to bring this up sometimes it feels like it was ripped up from the spot that is irritated and makes it feel much worse. I'm still trying to figure out what is going on. I've been to my GI dr and he thinks its GERD, I've been to an ENT and he thinks it could be allergies or GERD. I just switched from Prevacid to Zegerid and can't really tell a difference yet... I have a humidifier going in our bedroom when we sleep at night and can't really say that it has helped. Some mornings I wake up and am choking because my mouth is so dry, take a drink of water and I'm better...

Anyone have any thoughts or ideas. This has been going on for quite a while and dr's aren't giving me any advice... I could really use some help.

I have asthma along with the GERD. A mucous
'plug' forms in the bronchii with coughing as a
result. When you cough up the thick gooey 'plug',
the cough is relieved. Reflux and asthma go
hand in hand.

I've had the same symptoms for over 10 years now. All Dr's say LPR and I believe it. I don't watch what I eat because sometimes nothing bothers me and then others water will. Confusing if allergy or reflux. Take Nexium but can't tell any difference now. It did get me better way back when I thought I was going to die. Still feel like that sometimes!

In my case I also find that what I eat doesn't seem to make much difference. I'm about 90% convinced that my LPR was caused by a virus because it came on so suddenly and immediately following a viral infection. Sometimes I wonder if my esophagus will ever return to "normal." No choice but to wait and see. In the meantime I take omeprazole twice a day most of the time. Sometimes (like tonight) I forget to take the omeprazole before dinner and then I just take an H2 blocker instead. Doesn't seem to make any difference one way or the other.

As for quick soothers I would recommend Gaviscon liquid antacid. My ENT recommended it in the beginning when I was first diagnosed and in much pain. Now I seldom need it, but it definitely helps when my esophagus is feeling particularly sore.
