DBZ - Do you feel that the ending was a cop out?

I've never cared for the ending to Dragonball Z, as it was left so open ended that it felt like a cop out. They have us go through 291 episodes (or 26 manga volumes) just to have the series end with Goku going off to train Ubu instead of something concrete and conclusive, and that is why I always felt the ending to GT was better, as it gave us an actual ending. So my question is, do you feel that the ending to DBZ was nothing more than a cop out?

Oh yeah, and while this is deviating from my main purpose, I seem to be confused. When Dende first becomes Kami and creates the dragonballs, he states that Shenlong will only be able to grant 2 wishes, yet, in the Boo saga, Shenlong is able to grant 3.

Well, DBZ never had much of a story... That's the thing. It was just one bad guy after the next. Nothing else really there.

So the ending made sense to me. =P

(Personally I am very much of the opinion that the series should have ended after Goku defeated Freiza, because after that the series went way downhill.)

Personally, I'll be happy with the original ending Toriyama had in mind (Where Goku dies like a hero in the Frieza saga. Or something like that. But I do know it's around the Frieza saga. Or the other ending where Goku dies in the Cell game and Gohan becomes the next hero for earth. But nope, we had to add one more saga in it.)

But the ending that Toriyama made for the series I like. I think the reason why he left that opening is so the story will go on and on. Like, there's no ending to it. Personally, I like it. It kind of gives you the feeling the series in the Dragonball world will go on forever.

But, thats me.

In addition to your post Goodfellow, I found the attempt at drama to be ill-conceived. I mean Goku could easily return home through instant transmission, and yet we're suppose to believe that he won't be able to see them for a long time.

I definitely think Freezer would have been the best ending, as they defeated the ultimate being in the universe. On the other hand, the thing that made Cell great was he had to build up his abilities, which was cool, and I do think Goku dying for real was great, as it passed the torch to Gohan. There was no need for the Boo saga, which jsut drags on and on, and then brings Goku back from the dead again.

I personally think it was a perfect ending to the series. Goku has taking on student in Ubu who he can train to become the next protector of Earth. Ending on a light-hearted open note was the best for a series who main focus was always fantasy action and adventure.

Not true, If there was no Buu saga, then we never get the satisfying resolution to the Goku/Vegeta rivalry that Buu saga gave us. Not to mention, it allowed Toriyama to go back to the back to fantasy and comedy roots of the series beginning.

The Buu saga was the best of the whole series, the Z portion I mean. The rivalry between Goku and Vegeta was wrapped up nicely. The fantasy and humor finally returned; I never cared for the gung-ho seriousness of the Freeza and Cell saga. The magic and adventure that was so prevalent in the original series was back again, and in full force. There's awesome techniques and transformations. C'mon, Fusion is one of the coolest techniques in any fighting anime. The bad guys were not only a threat to the Earth, or even the universe, rather the whole of existence; Heaven, Hell, the Living Realm. It was all under threat from Majin Buu. How do you get more epic than that?

It would have been a damn shame to end the series after Freeza. I never cared much for the Cell saga, it was way to predictable and boring, but it lead to something great so for that it deserves to exist.

The ending itself, with Goku taking off with Uub would have been a great concept for a anime-only sequel. But instead, we got GT. It was alright but nothing special.

I loved the ending, it was perfect and true to every character. It was complete enough so that you know that our heroes story is over and their happily ever after, but it was open enough so that you know that the adventures are just on the horizon for future generations, like Uub. At least that's how i felt about it anyway anyway.

I am a big Dragon Ball Z fan and yes I felt it was a big cop out, Goku was always a family man and cared for his frienRAB first. Than this newbie kid comes along and hey its bye bye Goku, don't worry about it Goku I'm sure your family can fend for themselves till GT comes along. Even in the end of Z Bulma says why don't you ever visit us or write to us? That was not how Goku was like the other half of the Z series, just made me sad is all. Also I am ticked off that the Goku fan boys had to interfear with the series, now I am a fan of Goku too but gese does he really have to be the heroe of every saga? Cell saga was the only saga Goku was not the Heroe, that was Gohans time to shine finally. But they had a plan for Gohan to finish off Buu but no the Goku fan boys had some thing to say about that
Ok now I'm feeling angry blah.

I'm a fan, but I never was happy about the ending, with Goku abandoning his family again (I suppose you can say that's in-character).

As for the wishes, remeraber that in Buu they used both the Dragon Balls of Earth (which grants two wishes) and New Namek (which grants three I believe). Let me try to remeraber how many wishes were made in Buu:
2 of the wishes were to resurrect a group of people: Those killed on the day of the Budokai (Earth DB), and the population killed by Buu (New Namek DB). In both cases, they excluded the evil people (though Android 17 somehow survived).
1 wish (New Namek) to restore Goku to full power (so he can give the final blow to Evil Buu).
1 wish (Earth) to erase Buu from the memories of Earth's population (allowing him to coexist peacefully with the inhabitants).
Wasn't there 1 wish to resurrect Vejita? (This had to be the New Namek DB, since Vejita had died twice)

There were three wishes made with the Namek Dragon Balls during the fight against Buu:

1) Bring back the Earth with damages undone.

2) Bring all the non-evil people back to life, including Vegeta.

3) Restore Son Goku to full power.

It's probably hard to do an ending to please everyone when Toriyama's previous two attempts at one (Frieza and Cell) were vetoed by the editors. I'm not a fan of the GT ending personally. Whilst it provided closure, it was also fairly grim- everyone else in the cast was old or dead, whilst Goku becomes an immortal manchild. It feels so cold given that Dragonball's charm lied in its diverse cast. The ending of GT pretty much labels it as a crappy sequel that cared only about Goku. Toriyama's ending offers hope and is in a sense more realistic because life never really enRAB. So ending it by saying everyone would keep on being who they are and that they'd triumph what ever unseen dangers they faced next seems more hopeful and fitting in my mind.

Well, Toriyama was pretty burnt out. He just wanted to end it, and even apologized he did it so quickly. At the end of the day Gok

eh, technically it sort of will, Toriyama is working on this dragon ball mmo that hes set 1000 years of Goku leaves to train Uub, and since he is the author that totally sort of makes its events cannon, also, it acts as if Gt never happens. Oh yeah, Saiyans are allegedly extinct.

Sorry, but I'm pretty sure Toriyama is done with DB series forever.

He really wanted to and should have ended with the Freiza saga.

There's no public confirmation the story was meant to end at the Freeza saga.

Toriyama said he was done 15 years ago, and in that time he's still contributed to the animation side of DragonBall, not to mention new artwork for covers and spines of the Manga. Then there's material for DBO, which he has seemingly been working on for years. While exploration past chapter #519 is probably done, he's at last accepted the rediculous amount of mountains of money to do much smaller things.

I was personally most satisfied with the way the Cell Games ended, with Gohan standing tall as the new defender of Earth and Goku moving on to the next world. For me, that was the perfect ending, as they spent quite a while building up Gohan as Goku's heir apparent.

As for DBZ's finale, yes, I did find it a bit lame that Goku left AGAIN. The fact that he hadn't matured even one iota after all that time, and left to go train on a whim like that was a bit annoying, but I stopped trying with the DBZ story after the Cell Saga.
