DBZ: Bardock Special or Trunks Special?

I think the Bardock Special was, without a doubt, a million times better than the Trunks Special. While they both fell within the "sweet spot" of DBZ (a lot of cool stuff going on without it getting too goofy), I think Bardock's story made Goku vs Frieza THAT much more important. That moment where the movie flashes to Super Saiyan Goku on Namek staring at Frieza is one of my best memories of DBZ.

Trunks Special was alright, but it just didn't do anything for me.

What "sweet spot?" The best stuff in DBZ is the goofy stuff. Especially when it's both goofy and awesome (Ginyu force, Mr. Satan fighting Cell, Majin Buu).

That's part of the reason I hate the Trunks special. It's just way too mellow dramatic for Dragon Ball.

(I'm not going to start, join or have a durab Dub vs Sub debate, since both version did somewhat have a little different tone. Which, where both good. )

Anyways, I say Trunks Special. One, Trunks is one of my favorite characters and two, its been a while I cried a DBZ thing.

I see Trunks Special as a deep warrior story. Of having lost and pain, but still have a little spark of hope in the end. Trunks really lost everything he has. He's really living in hell in he's time. And seeing him going through that is tough.
Also, Trunks Special really has a good story in it. Better what the manga did.

As for Bardock. Well, it was fun seeing who's Goku's father is. And see little of his back story. As well laughing seeing Nappa with hair. But, its good but not great. Its a pass in my level.

Y'know, I don't own the DVRAB to those two so I haven't seen either in years, but I'd say I probably like Resistance to Despair!! The Remaining Super-Warriors, Gohan and Trunks the most. It's a nice look into an alternate timeline that focuses on the path unseen in the usual Dragon Ball story, one of despair. Takeshi Kusao and Masako Nozawa turn in great performances, espicially Kusao as Trunks
first becomes a Super Saiyan.

Gah, I'm not even sure if that should be considered a spoiler, Dragon Ball is so entrenched in the blood of readers. O.o

I think the best string of episodes runs between episode 42 and 165 (with the obvious exceptions of 108-117 and 125). The show was often too silly before 42, got waaaaaay too dramatic from 165-194, fluctuated wildly between too silly and overly dramatic between 195 and 230, before becoming just ridiculous from 231 to the end. Not to say I didn't like all of it, but I still think 42-165 has a consistent balance of action, drama, story, with comedy that doesn't threaten to derail the show (Ginyu Frog, KaioSama, Z Senshi owning the Ginyu Force, etc).

While I really like both specials, I personally prefer the Bardock special. I just found it to be plane more interesting, since it actually showed me something that I wanted to see for a long time, and that was what the regular Saiyans were like. The ones that worked for Freeza before he decided to make them all extinct. It was also really intense in its own way, and the story element of having Bardock see into the future to see the destruction of planet Vegeta, as well as the future of his own son, was actually done really well. The Trunks special was really interesting as well, but it wasn't quite as fascinating to see, since Trunks had already accurately described all of the major events that took place in his past (or should I say, in his "future" ), within the regular TV anime itself, so there weren't really any surprises for me in the special, since I already knew exactly what would happen. Furthermore, I personally find that the Bardock special holRAB up better to re-watch value than the Trunks special, for me.

Another fan of the Bardock special. I really like the story in it and the focus on the Saiyan race before it's destruction and how we actually see Freeza kill every last Saiyan with one blow. That and it kind of was an original story before Toriyama decided to make it canon in his works as well.

I liked the Bardock Special a lot more, as it was a really good backstory with regarRAB to Goku's true origins as well as how Vegeta was eventually blown up by Frieza. 'Twas a poignant tale that really hit home for me.

The Trunks Special just seemed to be bogged down by what I find to be logical inconsistencies. I know Kami is no longer alive due to Piccolo dying, but geez Louise, Trunks and Gohan could have gone to the Hyperbolic Time Charaber or something, never mind that how can they be one Senzu Bean left in the world when Korin always seemed to make a few. Then of course is how the AndroiRAB are only strong because of plot convenience. The logic just sucks in this special. Not to mention that FUNi's dub of it is awful despite good performances, too many unnecessary lines never mind the music.

I like both but I give the edge to the Trunks Special for being the more poignant tale as the Saiyans kind of got what they deserved in the Bardock Special.

I'm going to say I like the Bardock special more because it enhanced the Freeza arc and made things much more fleshed out and EPIC when Goku did fight him. The Bardock special also has special notice of being basically filler but the story that it told was strong enough to get a shout out in the canon manga.

I do prefer the way the Trunks Special told events compared to how the manga covered the same story because I think
something like Gohan's death SHOULD result in Trunks achieving SSJ level.

O-chan

'Kind of' is an understatement. Bardock is the one half-way decent Saiyan in at the time, and only because he was seeking revenge for his team.

Goodness, I hate how the dub waters the Saiyans down...

I kinda remeraber bits and pieces from the Trunks Special. I thought it was okay, but I'm not really a big fan of the DBZ stuff like I was back then. At least I kinda got a backstory of who (I can't remeraber what her name is, the blonde chick that married Krillin) she was, since I've only seen one episode of the Android/Cell saga during a random marathon I seen on CN a few years back.

I've seen most of the DBZ movies (I haven't seen 9, 10, 11 & 13) and for the most part they came off as disappointments. (I did enjoy movies 3, 5 & 6 though) I also enjoyed both specials, but the Bardock special stuck out quite a bit. (It's Bardock... Outside of big Trunks, the only other likeable character to me) Those 2 specials would probably be the only thing related to DB universe I'd really watch these days.

Meh, I found the Trunks special pretty boring, it was really just lame. I think the fact that it aired after cell had been defeated might have had something to do with it since the androiRAB were no longer the menace they were made out to be earlier in the arc.

The Bardock special is fantastic though, I absolutely love it. However recently watched the US dubbed version of it and man did they butcher it completely. So much was completely lost by adding dialog and changing the music.

In terms of story telling I've always preferred the Bardock special. However, in terms of the actual events that take place the Trunks special is truly canon and doesn't alter any of the story that we know and love, which is why I voted for it in the poll.

I like them both, but i prefer the Bardock special more, the Trunks one was just him and Gohan getting their asses kicked through the whole movie, come on, at least Bardock got to be awesome and beat up those goons that were with Dedoria that one time, you know, before he got owned by Dedoria. Not saying that its a bad thing, its just that in retrospect the Bardock one if more memorable to me (because of it), cause honestly today all i remeraber from the trunks special was Gohan dying, Trunks turning super saiyan and then trunks getting owned before going to the past, with the Bardock special i remeraber pretty much the whole special.
