Datebk5 version 5.4a is posted.

Please note that a new V-5.4a release has been posted:
http://www.pimlicosoftware.com/datebk5-v54a-p5.zip

This release addresses a somewhat obscure issue which on the Treo650
can end up causing the first hard button to be "hijacked" by Datebk5
with no easy way to reset it (since the PREFS app no longer allows
you to reassign that button).

This P5 release avoids that problem from reoccurring, and there is
also a link to a small stub app:
http://www.PimlicoSoftware.com/resetphonebutton.prc
which will FIX this problem if it has already occurred (Just
install, run and remove). This same problem might occur on the
Tungsten T5 (although that's less likely to occur).

This release also includes a workaround for the Treo650/T5 bug of
deleting Todo's causing a bogus VFSDBCache.c error in the PalmOne
DataManager patch which then crashes underneath Datebk5: this
release changes all DmDeleteRecord function calls to DmArchiveRecord
(..) which apparently works ok. I'll remove this workaround if/when
PalmOne ever fixes their code.

Cheers!

Think I'm going to whiz off a money order to Mr. Gorilla.

I've tried versions before but may have to just "deal with it" and give Agendus a skip -- or at least have an option.

I won't make the same mistake as last time though, with the "@@@" stuff polluting the database; if I skip Agendus it's SKIPPED entirely - uninstalled along with the "icon notes" it makes in the DB's. I'm also going to use IconManager to COMPLETELY REVAMP the icon set into a "Datebk5Icons" set APART from the stock set I tried to use with a simple "rename;" I had a lot of problems with icon crashes and never fully understood why. Perhaps it was the "icon notation" in the notes section - that won't happen this time. DateBk5 takes Hi-Res icons, right? Think so - now.

DateBk5 would then be the "only game;" I notice on the Agendus forum more and more people are switching and as Jim Cooke pointed out he paid $19 in the "year dot" and still got upgrades through 2 complete versions.

I think the key to "switching" to DB5 is GET RID of everything else including any remnant records/stubs/markers in your tasks/calendar DBs. Then once you go with DB5, don't switch.

$24.95 (current full price, new subscriber) would be going to Iambic ANYWAY through (I'm guessing) June of next year . . . and I've already PAID and then PAID AGAIN for 8.06PRO upgrade - now facing V9 PAYING AGAIN. That dog won't hunt.

At least Pimlico offers upgrades (and often, and they work) and don't ream you. Just wish it had same "look" that I'm used to - and I believe no MakeSpot or templates, either. Rats. Well, at least the alarms work, you can "alter" how purging databases with respoect to contact information is done, and it DOESN'T CRASH. That's kind of important. I think the learning curve is steeper, but once you figure out "view prefs," it's probably MORE configurable than Agendus.

I have used Datebook for a long time and find it an excellent program. Updates keep coming and, as PTL, says, always work.

Dwinget - Not sure if you've seen this:

which makes me wonder whether the Treo 650 will be available here at all.

Wow. I hope this isn't going to happen. I haven't even seen GSPDA handsets. I wonder what makes palmOne think they are succeeding in China? Most of the people I know here in Hong Kong are using palmOne handhelds.

Are they going to shut down the manufacturing in China and continue selling in the region or does the plan include shutting down both the factories and retail operations? I also wonder if it will only affect Mainland China and not Hong Kong.

If they withdraw totally, I may have to think seriously about making the switch to Pocket PC. I hope it doesn't come down to that because I have found my T3 to be a lot more useful than my old iPAQ. Especially when using my Microsoft Office documents. I have also invested a lot in Palm applications.

I hope Iambic will fix the problems in Agendus soon and start improving PR by offering free updates. They currently are hurting the palmOne cause. Many people are upset at palmOne and certain software developers. In addition, palmOne seems very hesitant to release Cobalt 6 handhelds until 2006 at the earliest. It appears the nails are being hammered into palmOne's coffin.

On a side note, I read someplace that some Datebk5 users are using programs called Relate and Phone Magic to enhance the way Datebk5 works.

Good call on several accounts:
------------------------------------------
1. I'm with you on the Palm OS investment thing vs switching to PPC, but the Dell Axim rocks - sorry!! I'm a T3 guy for the forseeable future but I can hear thos nails "banging in." Sad the PPC will probably win over time due to SERIOUSLY poor vision on behalf of PalmOne AND some developers. You're dead on.

2. I downloaded and tried RELATE, which DOES NOT SYNC (activate command bar icon within) Agendus - so Datebk5 users have an advantage there. If you link a memo with a to-do you MUST use the "tasks" link rather than Agendus to have the linking - thus it's no advantage for Agendus users.

Also, no icon shows up on the linked items - you have to "remember" there's a link, activate the command bar and then go to the linked app. I was hoping for an icon right there (such as Bonsai's "Back2Bonsai" linking). One good advantage of RELATE is you can VIEW AND EDIT ALL the exisitng links right from the Relate app itself - handy for purging links no longer needed. This would help prevent corruptions and is a nice feature.

RELATE does not link other apps besides the four standard Contacts, Tasks, Calendar and Memos. No linking for Docs2Go spreadsheet, for example. Bummer!! Imagine being able to link a contact photo in the AcidImage DCIM folder with the address book - and skipping the screwed up "sort of, maybe" Agendus method.
--------------------------------------------

I might try the other app you listed above; their website looked a little "goofy" with the all the "magic crystal ball" references, but hopefully THAT ONE may link to something other than Datebk5; it seems DB5 has more outside app compatibility than Agendus - and that could make up for no MakeSpot and some other Agendus features I like.

Looks like an initial outlay of around $50 to switch to DB5 and some "4th party" add-ons, but you'd have some interesting linking possiblities such as multiple meeting contacts/memos/alternate contact referrals within a to-do or meeting. This looks like an interesting PLUS for DB5 . . . . .

but this link REALLY helped me decide (not a rant at all - just GREAT information):
