Data usage (GPRS/EDGE) - Does it block calls?

I've got an e61 on the way, and I'm curious if I have my phone set to poll for new mail (IMAP4) every 5 minutes or 10 minutes or so - will it block phone calls during the polls? I can't afford to miss calls, but it's also important I get my email.

Also, if I'm using the e61 as a modem tethered to my macbook, is it going to miss calls?

you arent going to miss calls while email is polling, but a connection like tethering you definitely will. You only miss calls while data is very active, not idling like polling.

Ok. What about something like agile messenger? I'm assuming that's the best IM client out right now, would using that cause missed calls?
