Data Plan vs. Old Plan

I know this question has been addressed before but I have a specific circumstance. I am now on a regular plan with AT&T (regular meaning no smartphones or PDA's). My plan consists of a $30 per month family texting fee and a $10 per line (with 2 lines) unlimited data. My question is, can I keep this plan and have it work on a smartphone? Considering I am already paying for unlimited data I do not see why I would have to pay an additional $30 per month for another data fee. I do not plan on using the smartphone for smartphone purposes such as email or web browsing, just as a simple texting and call phone. Do I still have to take the data plan?
 
Also, what would happen if I purchased a smartphone and had the data plan for one month, then canceled it. Would the phone still be able to be used?
 
You cannot cancel the data plan on a smartphone. It is REQUIRED. If you have a dumb phone and switch to a smartphone (even a used smartphone), the data plan will automatically be added to your account.
