Das Boot is probably the best WW2 movie, in my opinion.
I heard the announcer advertising it last night, and he made specific mention that it was the directors cut. It stuck in my mind, because I don't think I've ever heard an announcer comment on which particular version of a film they're showing. Certainly not on the Beeb anyway.
Good job though, as the standard version is appalling.
Yeah,i bought the video a long time ago.I was so dissapointed with it i threw it in the bin.It was horrendous.
I watched a bit of it last night, the rest i've recorded.
It's a timeless classic,i'd agree the best war movie ever.
The 6-part TV miniseries is without doubt the best, however bear in mind that a fair bit of the story focuses on boredom, which means that the long version of the story can run very slowly in places. This makes it pretty well impossible to watch the entire mini-series in a single sitting.
BBC2 used to show the mini-series in five chunks, with the first two parts rolled together in to make a feature-length opener.
Recent DVD editions have had the soundtrack reconstructed in 5.1 surround, which is far better than the original 1981 mono.
I've seen 2 of the versions, theatrical and another cut, both really good. Got one that I bought on DVD a while back, not sure which cut but is about 4.5/5hours long, just waiting for the right time to watch without interuptions.
Thanks for the links Tadpole.Interesting stuff.Especially the U Boat site.
I notice Jurgen Prochnow was born in Berlin,1941.Talk about a baptism of fire!.
I love this film. I have the longer version of it on dvd but have only watched it once as I required an entire box of kleenex to get through the ending.
