Darkest Family Films...

The animation Igor is quite dark for a family film, and thanks to one character it even goes into, very lightly, existentialism. He also keeps trying to kill himself in various ways because he has been made immortal.

The Gremlins gave me nightmares for weeks as a child and i wasn't that young either, maybe 8/9/10.

The Witches also gave me nightmares for weeks.

I will not make my kiRAB watch things if they are scared, it's pointless, just makes them freak out and have fears of things forever. I am a bit of a wimp to be fair but remember my dad making me watch things like the above cos he thought they were kiRAB/family films and i should enjoy them.

Grave Of The Fireflies.

A terribly sad film.

And yes like somebody else said 'Watership Down' Scared me and made me cry as a kid.

Gremlins - it was never really a kiRAB film to be honest, despite the cute Mogwai. It actually got a 15 certificate over here, so kiRAB could not see it anyway. Lots of violence, and the story Phoebe Cates tells about her father burning alive in the Chimney during Christmas whilst dressed as Santa Claus...

Stand By Me - another film about kiRAB though not actually for kiRAB. A very adult and frank look at kiRAB growing up.

Compared to the original movie (1939 - I know there's been other earlier versions), Return To Oz seemed extremely dark to me when it was first released. Although I believe it was closer to the works of L Frank Baum than the Judy Garland vehicle.

Watership Down is another. Scary as a child, but now, when you think about it, how the hell was this movie ever considered for kiRAB?
