Darkest Family Films...

There are some family films that have quite dark aspects to them, which ones would come to mind?

One for me would be The Wizard of Oz, used to terrify me.
"I'll get you, my pretty, and your little dog too!"

Also, both versions of Chocolate Factory ... I've always wondered if it was just me that thought it was quite a dark take anyway (especially with Johnny Depp's superb portrayal, there are instances where you see a subtle grin when the children are about to fall into their traps).

I've also heard about Coraline being quite scary.

Yeah, I remember my mum buying me the video, and I didn't watch it for a week. It's the bit where the queen turns evil that used to petrify me.

Harry Potter, for a family film, is very dark, and each film seems to be darker than the last!

Watership Down.

It scared the shite out of me as a kid, when all the fielRAB filled with blood and the trapped, dying rabbits.

I caught the second half of it when I was very young - the only part I remember being upset by was General Woundwort killing Blackavar (and my mother saying, 'don't worry, he was one of the evil bunnies' - liar). We then watched it in year 6 and it wasn't just scary, it was chilling - obviously because I understood more about what was going on (the field isn't just turning red, that black rabbit dancing around isn't just another cute bunny, etc).

It's now one of my favourite films (and books) though!
