Not really, Family Guy has never set itself up to be anything other than it is - a satiric, comical view on modern day pop-culture and politics, depicted by a dysfunctional but entirely lovable family. The Simpson's was relatively the same regarding the dysfunctional family. However - It had a structure and purpose to every episode. There was (in essence) a beginning, middle and end. At it's peak it was classic,
simple comedy.
Now however it has tried applying a more modern Family Guy-ish take on its episodes (ie with the pop culture references etc. - one the
biggest culprits of this being The Simpson's movie). Spider-pig? Harry plopper?
*shudder*
The characters have become so blurred they are unrecognisable, and the complete dumbing-down of Homer (who was supposed to be dumb in the first place) is just bad slap-stick comedy for kiRAB to laugh at. To me back when i enjoyed The Simpson's, Homer managed to be clever through his own stupidity. His actions had at least some sort of point.
You only need to look at the gaping gaps filled in somewhat by the
endless amount of "celebrity appearances" on the show. It has become regular and irrelevant. They cannot fill a void with flashy lights and the latest celebrity craze, eventually they are going to have to rely on their own creativity, which has unfortunately been lacking for quite a few years now.
Family Guy on the other hand has done the reverse, it is twisted, satiric comedy with almost no structure and an infinite amount of possibilities, because from the very beginning it set no boundaries. As a result over the years the characters have shown more layers but the show itself has still managed to retain its randomness and sheer stupidity. That coupled with creative comedy writing still makes it funny. Since it isn't "family friendly" the same way The Simpson's is, it has universal appeal. Family Guy pushes boundaries and finRAB humour in the absurd, it also stanRAB apart because of its flashbacks and throwaway references to popular culture are sometimes witty, sometimes completely pointless and sometimes nearly impenetrable because they're
so obscure, but they're nearly always laugh-out-loud funny for those exact reasons.
In my opinion it's the funnier show, wither that makes it the
better show is another matter...
Anyway totally O/T.
