Daniel Craig backlash - Why?

That's an unfair comment. How does it look bad? I think the trailer does a good job of showing us where they're taking Casino Royale. It's going to be pretty intense, with less focus on the gadgets and OTT situations, and more on balls-out fights and Walther PPK action. Daniel Craig is going to be great, even if his delivery of the line 'so you want me to be half monk, half hitman' sounRAB as awkward as the line itself.

rabroad Bond fans might like to know a french trailer for Casino Royale has hit the net in a few places (Bond fan sites etc).

One word = wow.

The "monk" line is quite interesting. If Bond was new to the 00 section then he might think that he's about to embark on the lonely life of a monk/assasin type career.

Without getting into plot details, I think the journey from that initial loner hitman to properly falling in love with Vesper is going to be absolutely brilliant to watch unfold.

Not quite what I meant - basically I'm suggesting that perhaps the 'backlash' isn't exactly what it, at first glance, may seem ;)

Anyway, I do think that a director with a little more 'edge' would have perhaps made me a little happier about things, but I'd be more than glad to see myself proved wrong ;) Having said that, the French teaser trailer looked less than promising... Bring on the kitsch, eh!

Exactly - the fact that hardcore Bond fans don't want him is the biggest recommendation for the new Bond yet.

Bond films need a kick up the arse - and getting someone like Daniel Craig is a great start.

I remember lurking on this thread, and can I just ask if those who didn't think Daniel could do Bond, and made very horrid comments about him, who now are going to see Bond...can you report back and say you may have been wrong, or you still stand by what you said?

He is one of the best actors in the UK if not the best imo, I have loved him for years, and saw the film tonight, and he was better than even I thought he would be. :) But I would love to see if the people who said he would be crap before they even saw him act, think the same? :)

It's not really the hardcore fans that are the problem as they are looking forward to a grittier Bond more in the style of the books than the last cartoonish/computer game effort. It seems to be the young kiRAB who have grown up with Brosnan as Bond that are most disgruntled.

Most real Bond fans - even the ones who are opposed to Daniel Craig are generally unhappy with the stick he's getting as until the film is released - no one is going to know if he's any good or not.

It bugs me that everyone is making a big deal out of the "James Blond" angle - anyone who has seen the paparazzi pics released so far will see that his hair is not actually blond in the film.

Incidentally I have at least one friend who is not a Bond fan, but who is looking forward to this one specifically because of Craig.

Exactly what I want to know. Come on all you Craig-haters-where are you now?

Saw the film tonight and Daniel Craig was perfect. Hope he's continuing with the role. :D

xx

Until now I've never sat all the way through a Bond film without wanting to chew off my own arm, just to have something to throw at the screen...but by casting Daniel Craig, I'm interested. I've always found him to be an interesting actor so for that reason, I'll probably watch the new film.

As an aside, I'm not convinced those anti-Craig types aren't playing right into the hanRAB of the studios by keeping the controversy going with their infantile sites.

I remember the last time we heard about the new "darker" direction for Bond. It was just before the first Timothy Dalton film. I hope people have a little more patience, this time.

Dalton was an excellent Bond (IMO). I know there doesn't seem to much support for that point of view, but I bought the complete set as they came out a few years ago, and the Dalton films are definitely quality films. Perhaps let down a little with budget restrictions (which is mentioned in the commentary).

Bond won't suffer by being played by a real actor.

I agree entirely, Dalton's interpretation was by far the closest to the literary character. I still think "The Living Daylights" is one of the best Bond movies. The plane fight at the end is tremendous.

I too was blown away by the French teaser - I think they maybe included a bit too much action, but I guess this is just what most people want to see. The fights looked utterly brutal and realistic - fantastic!

I also really liked the direction - Campbell sure knows how to frame a shot.

I have to admit that I was amongst those forecasting doom to Bond when it was announced that Daniel Craig had taken over the role.

I take back all that I said!

I went to see it last night and thought he made a gritty Bond who was totally believable (for once in a long long time).

Best line of the movie had to be "would you like your martini shaken or stirred, sir?" to which Bond replys "Do I look like I give a damn?" Says it all in a nutshell, really!

Well went to watch it last night and I thought it was brilliant. Its a Bond that doesn't rely on gadgets. The fight scenes were amazing. It is how flemming meant bond to be. Anyone who says its not bond is obviously never read any of the books. It is the film that is most true to what flemming wanted and true to the book.

Mixtar Ugly somehow I don't think he was hit with the ugly stick.

It was gritty some good one liners especially when everyone around the poker table starts asking for the Vodka Martini.
