When it's OFF.

That does NOT sound good, accompanied with a burning smell. I had to disconnect the battery cable to get it to stop.

I'm PISSED.

Maybe it's karma? I have no idea.

But anyway I'm ubermad at the moment. Friday the 13th sucks. I get home and read on thirdgen.org that some other guys camaro seriously caught fire and went up in flames entirely! Anyoen else have some freaky shit happen today?

Only freaky shit I had was, A walmart CSM called in that acctually knew how to turn off a register. Walmart CSM'S suck my balls

I think some guy's street sweeper caught on fire in the middle lane of I-5 yesterday.... haha... silly Washington.

Almost sounds like it might have been the rad fan. On alot of cars the rad fan will keep running after the engine is shut off, until it cools down.

That sounded quite loud though...might want to get it checked out.

I'm gonna leave it as is for a few days. Me and a friend are gonna start pulling one fuse at a time until it stops, hopefully narrowing down teh source of hte noise.

I think it might be the starter free-spinning without engaging the flexplate. If it's nto the starter, it may be the fuel pump going on the fritz. If not that, I've got no clue.

I'll figure it out though. I can afford to fix whatever it is. I've just got to find it.

Oh and it's not the fan. I specificlaly checked for that. The fan isnt that loud anyway.... You guys should hear that demon screech that thing was doing in person.

Friday the 13th...

Take a screwdriver and press one part to your ear, and put the sharp metal end on the altanator. I can kinda hear something like a bad alt bering in that vid, but can't be sure. If not, use the above method to narrow it down...

The engine isn't running, so that rules out the alternator.

The fuel pump is most likely in the tank, so it would be coming from the back if that's it.

Question: does it start up again as soon as you reconnect the battery? Or does disconnecting the battery "reset" it, and it doesn't start again until the car's running again?

It could be the starter; but if you can still start the car while it's making that noise, it's not. If the starter is spinning, it would of course grind the gears when you turn the key to start the engine. If nothing changes when you turn the key (while it's making that noise), then it very likely is the starter. Most likely a short somewhere causing the starter to be keep running, although I don't see how that would work, with it not kicking the gear out to turn the engine.

If it's not the starter, fuel pump, or rad fan, I have no clue what it would be.

I am not a mechanic but I had something close happen to me and it was the battery, if battery's output drops below a certain voltage it can cause the relays to click, until the battery is totally dead. Does the car start?

That's some smart thinking. I never wanted to turn the car back on with that noise going, so I dont know if it would have worked that way or not...

I'll give that a shot, definitely.

Im hoping the starter is just on the fritz. Simple problem, simple solution.

Searching through wires for shorts, not a simple process at all...

And I havent even bothered reconnecting the battery since last night. I'm just gonna wait til monday (my day off) and spend the day figuring it out.

I'm just hoping that the part of the starter that moves the assembly to engage the flexplate is working fine but the part that actually spins isnt stopping when it should. Because if I assume it's the starter it almost makes sense how it would spin up right as I drop the key back to the "on" position. Because it's fine during the actual starting, but as soon as you get it started and move the key back... it spins up.

I makes sense to me... at least as much sense as something ridiculous like that can.

And the battery is an optima red top. I think it's fairly new, so Im hoping that's not it... But it'll be easy enough to switch in another battery and see.

This doesnt sound like reays clicking. This sounds like something spinning, and spinning fast... Which is why I keep thinking it's the starter... because it's one of the only things that can spin that isnt powered by hte motor.

Also, yes the car starts, it runs fine. I made sure ot pay attention to my voltage gauge in the dash and it hovered right around the center where it usually does. I actually cranked it and shut it down twice until the noise stopped, and desperate because I needed to get home, I waited til it stopped the 2nd time and cranked it again and it worked fine, no noise, no problems, it got me home with no fuss.

So whatever it is, it happens when the car is starting, and just sometimes, or most of hte time, but not always.

OK yeah see what happens if you try to start it while it's making that noise.

I'm not a mechanic, but I do pretty much all my own mechanical work. Some exceptions for first time doing some things, but I usually pay attention so I can do it myself next time.

This should be fun to do then...

Everyone is either confused or they think it's the starter going nuts. So I'm definitely leaning towards the starter.

If I buy a new starter, does that include the solenoid?

Also dude, you do your own work. Is there some easy way to get the car into neutral without cranking it up? I'm just now getting into doing a lot of my own work, and that's something that I havent run into yet.

You know, from hearing the video, I automatically want to say it's the electric fan running. But I have no idea what year this car is or even what it is. I can't tell from the video.

In my years of cars...I've never heard a starter doing that efter shutting it off. If your starter was going to do this, it would do it the first time you start it up and continue..and trust me, the sound it would make while running is fucked. (then again...it depends on auto or stick) I hope I'm not wrong here, but the starter is my last thought. (again...lack of info here of what it it is) Then again, I have been away from the newer cars...so....I'm going from about 10 years ago.

You mentioned that the belts made a horrible screech (maybe I read that wrong), but that would tell me that you have a water leak somewhere getting on the belts..which in turn would cause it to run hot. In turn, the fan running overtime to cool it down after shut down.

I am confused myself...I'm probably wrong here...but it did one thing for me. It reminded me I haven't started my '69 Plymouth Valiant in over a month.

I'm heading to the garage to baby my baby.
