Fact: Wing Commander Guy Gibson's Dog (A Black Lab) was called 'N199er'

Fact: N199er was the codename for the breaching of the Ruhr Dam on the Dambusters raid

With this in mind, do you think that the name of Wg Cdr Gibson's dog should be edited/censored from Peter Jackson's upcoming remake of the Dambuster's movie. Something Mr Jackson discussed could possibly be a possibility.

Personally I find it disgusting that history should be edited because of ignorant people.

Do you think it will?

Ah, tell me Zeb - is ignorance really all that bliss?

Get a kin grip

N1gger stems from the latin 'Negro' or black.

In the thirties and forties it was a perfectly acceptable social term.

Why can rap groups such as NWA and comedians like Chris Rock spout n1gger this and N1gger that?

If the film was about persecution of blacks it would use this word in the interests of historical accuracy, why should a film BRITISH NATIONAL HEROES be subdued and dumbed down.

It's history, it's a fact.

Attitudes change. Language changes.

If people try to "edit" history, and pretend that something that is now politically incorrect, did not happen then they are no better than, say, the Taliban who tried to wipe out all references to non-Islamic Afghanistan, or the Khymer Rouge who decided there was no history prior to PolPot becoming ruler of Cambodia.

er ... but it wasn't 'acceptable', which is why black people didn't want to be called that in later years (because they won the argument to change attitudes)

NWA claimed they were making statement (which is dubious imo), while Chris uses it for comment in his comedy routines

well the film hasn't been made yet, so you're attacking something that might not even occur (or are you just trying to stir).

Chances are PJ will put some sort of disclaimer (if necessary) with the film, to show that no offence is intended

See 1984 and George Orwell, the rewriting of history for social or political purposes is extremely dangerous and wrong, political correctness and peoples sensibility is no excuse, what's next, the holocaust didn't actually happen.

Of course it is recognised as an insulting name these days, back in those days it was often used as a pet's name and as far as I am aware was meant without malice (why call a pet a name of something you hate?). If a remake of the film uses another name for the dog, it will be changing truth and history and as such will be not worth seeing. What else in the true story of Gibson will they change to suit todays PC climate - have him saying that the Germans were his frienRAB?

it was insulting back 'in the old days' too, otherwise people would never have stopped using the term. It's not like people suddenly decided in 1960 or whenever "hmm let's not say n***** anymore"

anyway as say above, it's not even been confirmed that there is gonna be a change. Seems like some people are attacking mythical forms of "political correctness gone mad" that hasn't even happened

My apologies, intended to include this in origional post.

Acclaimed movie director Peter Jackson is wrestling with a dilemma over the word "******" as he prepares for his new movie, a remake of the World War II epic "The Dambusters", reports said Monday.

The Oscar-winning "Lord of the Rings" director said the word has him in a no-win situation in his desire to accurately portray the true story of the British Royal Air Force's daring raid on German dams.

Dambusters Squadron Leader Guy Gibson's dog was called "******" and it was also a code-word in the raid, but given the offensive connotations of the word, Jackson said he was undecided if he should use it.

"It's a situation where you're damned if you do and damned if you don't," the New Zealander was reported saying Monday on the movie website Ain't It Cool.

"If you go one way, people are going to say we've sold out to political correctness. If you go the other way then you're obviously going to be inadvertently offending people. So, it's a no-win scenario."

Pressed on the choice of being safe or historically accurate, Jackson said "At some point we'll have to make the decision and whenever that happens we'll just see how we feel at the time."

The movie is based on a daring mission when Gibson's bombers used innovative bouncing bombs to destroy dams in Germany's Ruhr Valley industrial heartland

I guess we'll have to wait and see when the film comes out

I'm sure film goers will understand the need to keep the name for historical accuracy, I'm not expecting mass riots or protests. The Passion of the Christ or Da Vinci Code were more controversial and they passed off without incident.

not all black people go around complaining about things, regardless of what BBC2's recent Shoot The Messenger claimed :)

Living in the have it when we want it, think of myself world, it is becoming increasingly hard to imagine the courage that the original 'Dambusters' exhibited.

Society owes a great debt to the heroes of the second WW, who lost everything in order to preserve our future.

Despite this being a world of political correctness, surely we owe a debt of gratitude to those who sacrificed their lives by stating the facts as they were.

I pray that Peter Jackson reveals a semblence of the guts required that the original 'Dambusters' had. :)

I would be more offended by major historical innacuracies, something holywood is notorious for.

Usually this entails adding Americans to the story, hope they never remake waterloo it will almost certainly have a detatchment of us troops saving the day.

Am I concerned by a possible name change for the dog ? not really, I am pretty sure it was changed to digger in the original movie.

I had to read the book to find the dogs real name.
