Talk to friends, people you trust, about their experience cycling. Pick their brains for ideas and free advice. They will love to share with you what they know. Invite one of them to come along to a bike store to help you talk with the sales people there. (Avoid department store bikes completely!!!) Find a salesperson who has the time to carefully go over all the features with you and properly size you to a bike. Then test ride a few models to pick the one that feels right to you. Keep within your predetermined budget; you can get entry level road bikes for $600-$1,000. Remember accessories like a water bottle and holder as well as a helmet. Finally, start with shorter distances, say 5-10 miles, on bike paths, away from car traffic. You can even consider joining a bike club in your area that offers recreational rides. After that, the sky's the limit, including organized fundraiser rides that offer support and camaraderie. A bike will change your world...for the better.
