Cutting all meds. out witout any adverse effect

Hi:
I had a Neurological issue that is an excruciating pain in my both legs, mostly lower part of calves and also muscle spasm during sleep in prone position at nights. On the recent 'Nerve Test,' my Neuro. told me that it's normal without any damaged nor ill-nerve to see.

For those two issues, I've been taking moderate form of two different kinds of muscle and nerve pain meds for the past two to three years. However, I've started asking myself whether it's wise to cut those meds. completely because I experienced 'dizziness' along with some nausea?

So far, I've NOt any ill-effect of cutting meds. out from my system. However, wonder whether this, drasctic measure is no cause in regard to future-tense?

Any imputs would be greatly appreciated.

hi amanda,just had a couple of questions for you. have you ever actually had an MRI done on your full spine? this would either rule in or out certain issues that could be causing your pain and symptoms too. the thing about the "nerve testing" which is is usually an EMG/NCS it will ONLY pick up something on or within an actual nerve that is directly impedding nerve flow and nothing else. all that tells them(sometimes they only do just one of those two tests too) is that nothing is being "directly,constantly' inpinged not like the hundreds of reoccuring types of problems that can cause intermittant symptoms.

despite having horrid symptoms from a herniated c spine disc, only because this nasty thing was NOT directly impinging a nerve root, my test too came up totally normal, despite what my MRI of the c spine actually showed. the tech who did this very first EMG on me told me right away even before the test just exactly what had to be going on in there in order to actually show 'impairment' on that test. so when everything came up normal, despite really nasty pain and reoccuring numbness and tingling, she just repeated what she had told me pre test. it does NOT mean for one second that 'something' isn't wrong, just that no nerve roots are being directly compressed at the time of the test.

if you have not already had the MRI,and with a contrasting agent which just gives much more detailed scans, you really need to ge one just to see what could be causing your symptoms.

what meds were you on that you are just stopping? some can have very severe side effects if not properly tapered. the anti convulsants are just one of them. anything that has to be tapered onto, genreally also needs to be tapered off of too. just a good rule of thumb for ya. right now,you just really NEED to find the reason for your ongoing symptoms. good luck and please keep me posted, FB

Frankly, I, myself feel so amazed NO need to take those meds.any longer. Until then, I faithfully took meds. divided four times, even five due to mild headache/dizziness if took a whole pill of Skelain 500 mg. at once.

In regard to meds., first I was on Skelaxin 800 mg. started on one, and then two, but still not effect on my muscle spasm, my Nuero. told me take three, even four pills(max.) that was quite expensive even on BCBS. I paid almost $100 montly on that, a single pill bottle. After having told its price, my Neuro rx'ed Robaxin 500 mg./Generic, Methocarbamol 500 mg. two to start and then three tid. Besides muscle spasm med., I was on Gabapentin 100 mg. for my nerve-pain in the left upper thigh two caps. before the bed. Also, I was on Proponolol 10 mg. one tab. for minor tremor. Then, there are three different meds.in all for the past two to three years.

As in my first post, I dropped all of three med. completely after having experienced mild to severe dizziness along with nausea, for which I took 'travel sickness,' 'Meclizine HCL' one tab, then cut in a half the next day and that lasted about three days.

In terms to 'Nerve Test,' it was quite simple and easy, but my Neuro. told me no need MRI or X-ray because my back has not hurt often, ... only once a month or so.

Tapering off any meds. gradually is DIFINETELY my ideal, but due to the urgency, 'severe dizziness,' I took, a kind a chance/risk, as seeing that I might have ended up Emergency either way, due to the weekend. It was VERY lucky and fortunate NOT get any ill-effect, as looking back the event now.

However, I never recommend anyone trying to end all meds. abruptly, ... like I did.
