Cute heroes/ugly villains

Is it me or does this dominant standard in the West not exist in Japan at all?

For there, even villains are cute in anime, and there are even ugly good guys.

I know the early Disney movies, it was commonly was the beautiful good looking heros, and the villains were ugly wizard or witch.

I think in the real world, the beautiful people are the evil ones. LOL

It depends on the show itself, not the country of origin. There's plenty of counter-examples for each side, so making some sort of generalization about it won't be accurate at all.

it's rampant in advertising as well

example: the Alltel commercials featuring the handsome Alltel spokesman versus the other guys: a chunk, a ginger, a pasty, and a big nose.

even car insurance commercials. I recently saw an ad where the driver at fault was a short, dumpy, bald man as opposed the victim was yet another tall, handsome man.

nevermind the fact that I just happen to be a tall, dark handsome man, I'm still disgusted at how shallow advertising is. but it's here to stay.

Ain't that the truth. God forbid we see someone like Nick, & Jessica experience the hardships that the rest of us go through on a day to day basis. (Although some of us would like to see them knocked down a few pegs.) However, there are exceptions to this rule. Mindy from 'Billy & Mandy' is very pretty, and popular, but she's also rude, arrogant, and walks all over anyone who's beneath her. Usually, she gets what she deserves in the end.

I think you are behind the times, there are many examples that counter this assumption. Almost every female villain in Western animation is usually drawn as being beautiful, nowadays. There are very few ugly females in any form of animation. Name one unattractive female anywhere in animation, there are very few. Plus there ugly good guys in western animation: Nightcrawler, the Thing and Beast for example. Also look at a show like Gargoyles, in it Xanatos would be consider attractive and the gargoyles would be considered ugly. What about Beauty and the Beast?

This seems like a thread that just assumes that anime is superior to all forms of animation and that is not backed up by the facts.

I agree. This sounds like just another "Anime is superior to USAnimation" statement made by someone who clearly hasn't researched a darn thing about the genre.

If all heroes in USAnimation are "pretty", than how do you explain Wolverine, the Savage Dragon and Jonah Hex? And if all USAnimated villains are "ugly", then explain Poison Ivy and Mystique? It's obvious that this person has no frelling idea what he/she is talking about.

The point of the cartoon in capitalism thread I started, was to compair the west and the east, pacific american cartoons vs Anime.

BTW, Mindy is one of those evil beautiful people I was talking about. Okay not evil, but still not very nice, I loved it when Pandora's box turned her face ugly, that was so funny.

The problem with these East vs. west threads is that they are based on assumptions that are not true.

You know what the biggest cliche in animation is, both east and West? There are no ugly women. There should be more ugly women in animation.

Agreed.

If memory serves, the Wicked Queen in Disney's Snow White was quite stunning. After failed attempts to have Snow White killed, she had to turn herself into an old woman.

Both "Snow White" and "Sleeping Beauty" had female villains that while not exactly cute, both had an air of sophistication about them, not to mention a certain cool charm.

Also, what about Princess Azula, Mai and Ty Lee? I wouldn't use the word ugly if I was to describe what they looked like.

In conclusion I have too disagree with the original poster, there are plenty of cute/attractive villains in western animation.

True though Avatar is half Anime, but that doesn't mean anything. Today we have improved on the always casting ugly people as villains. But there was a time when that was the case in my opinion, the 1980's Disney cartoons was quilty of that, though once in a while they would throw you a attractive villain, it inforced that the ugly people are the bad guys.

Avatar is a very deep and enlighted show, unfortuntely there are few shows like Avatar. Except for Ozai and maybe Azula, there are no clear cut villains, the show is full of gray characters.

I agree with you about those three girls being attractive especially Azula. I think Azula is very hot. While she is a horrible person, she is very attractive, I give the demon that. Though despite her hotness, she scares me at times, she is very intimating. Azula is scarer than any ugly animated witch. One of the things I am looking forward to in the Avatar movies, is seeing the live action version of the girls.

But is 20 years ago, the fact is BTAS completely changed everything. Before BTAS every villain in an animated series has a complete moron, it wasn't until BTAS that villains were competent. Same deal with cute/ugly villains, there were no ugly females in BTAS whether they were good or evil.

Besides there were many villains in the 80s that were "pretty", remember Evil-Lynn or the Baroness?

I said once in a while they throw in an attractive villain, so I am not saying all villains back than were ugly, and I was only referring to Disney.

By the way, is BTAS a movie or tv show? Or I assume intinally for something, if so what does BTAS stand for?
