Curve and data

Hi guys. I wanted to ask a tmobile reps a question. I have the curve and am forever in a wifi spot at work. My question is since the Curve has wifi, is it possible for me to drop the BB unlimited data and just go thru wifi?

You don't need to get the H@H plan, and you could drop the data plan. You won't get email pushed to your device and would have to get quite a few work arounds in order to make it work. I wouldn't suggest it but it can be done and you woud want the BB enabler add on in order to make some of the stuff work, but it will very limited in normal abilities. I would at least maintain the $9.99 email plan at the very least.

No, without a data plan you will not be able to access PUSH e-mail, bbm, internet browser, etc that are all features under bis/bes. As to the 'why', in the end all data is still going through RIM's servers, just being delivered to you via wifi instead of your gsm radio.

What is the minimum plan necessary to use the Google Calendar Sync, Gmail app, Google Maps and Opera Mini not on wifi? How about on wifi? Someone said that the big difference between the $10 Email only plan and the $20 plan is that the Web based service books are not included so the Google apps work because they do not use the books. I have also seen people talk about doing all of this on the $6 T-zones plan.

Thanks,
David

yeah, i'd keep the $9.99 plan at the very least...

honestly though, if you already have the unlimited data plan, you are gonna miss it the second you get out the door!! don't do it. haha. besides, tmo has the cheapest data plans available, take advantage of it.

The "doing all this on a $6 t-zone plan" I have never witnessed with a bb, only some other phones offered on T-mobile. As to the $10 email plan, technically it's just the BIS plan without the browser service books being pushed down and everything else will function, but use at your own risk. The plan is pretty clear that it's meant for email only. How you choose to use this information is up to you.

Thank you - that is the information I needed. I suspected that the reason I kept hearing different things was a discrepancy between their intent and what currently works. I am hoping to get the $20 plan but wanted to be certain what the difference was. If the Google Apps get modified to do data over wifi then I might switch to the $10 plan assuming that Google mail through the Blackberry is decent.

BTW, how fast is data access over wifi given that it has to go to the Blackberry server? Is is closer to wifi or to EDGE?

Thanks,
David

A lot of the confusion is based on users who haven't actually used it first hand, those who called up to t-mobile and received the incorrect answer from an uninformed employee, or asked a very broad question.

E.G.
"Will I have internet?"
"No, that's only in the BIS/BES plans."

Internal e-mails do not go out saying "Hey guys, this is the specifics on how we make the email only work and where the loop hole is." Some of Tmo's employees are savvier and understand how it works and will say "it's ok, you can still use it for apps", but no where have they received instruction to do so. Would be bad for business if BIS users started to head over in droves because they found out for half the price all they will lose is the BB browser, but still be able to use the TCP and BIS connections for 3rd party apps like Opera Mini, so imo they keep them a bit in the dark for a reason. I always warn when people go outside the realm of what a plan is intended to do, tread lightly. Saying "I didn't know!" rarely gets you out of surprise charges that can happen when carriers catch on to abuse of any particular feature. I personally doubt they're following that closely, but you never know.

Wifi speed depends on a lot of factors, including your particular router setup and connection. The BoyGeniusReport did a direct test between actually had EDGE load faster for data-heavy webpage than WiFi, but some of us on the site did a similar test while loading an mp3 over the browser and WiFi spanked it.
