They give a multitude of people something to commonly identify with, it imparts a feeling of shared experience, it can be a source of pride and individual self-worth. Best of all I say it can be a shortcut to new friends and associates, since the frequent obstacle of divergent experience when relating to new people is to a great extent canceled out.
