Hello:

Need your help please. I am in the process of having a CT Mylogram scheduled and wanted to know if anyone has had this procedure done and what I can expect from it. Been hearing conflicting reports on it. I have known cysts on my S1 and the doctor isn't sure if this is what's causing my low back pain, hip pain, and thigh pain. I get really stiff where walking is almost impossible at times. Thank you!:)

Welcome to the board. You should find comfort in the people here as many have chronic pain that we live with daily. I'm sorry that you are in this situtation at such a young age. Don't let the doctors tell you that your too young to have this treated. Young or old or middle aged we all experience pain of some sort. I would suggest treatments other than surgery. Always let surgery be your very last resort.

I've not had a CT Mylogram before. But I believe it's when they go in your back with an IV to put contrast. The contrast will highlight the areas that are bad. The just kinda outline the effected disks and nerve roots etc etc etc.

Some have said it's painful yet others say it's not bad at all. I've had a L4-L5 spinal fusion on 8/14/06. I did have xrays and MRI's and my doctor saw all he needed to from the MRI. That was why I had surgery. But I did do surgery as the very last resort. I've had epidural injections, pain meRAB, PT etc.etc.etc.
My surgeon decided that he really needed to go in and do the fusion due to damaged nerves. He was trying to reverse the nerve damage before it was permanetly damaged. Let us hear how things go with you and I think that you'll really like the support you get here. Don't hesitate to ask all the questions you need to have answered by us. Although by NO Means are we doctors we are just sharing our experiences. Nothing is too small or too large to ask us. Take care and let us know how your feeling.

Hi Shorty!

Thank you for the info! I'm kind of nervous about having this procedure done based on what people have been telling me. I guess I'll find out soon enough if its painful, but at this point I'm open to almost anything to try and find answers about why I'm in such chronic pain. I too have had the nerve blocking down (to no avail) along with PT which helped a tiny bit but at the time they didn't really know what they were treating me for. Still don't really. By having this done, hopefully it will give my doctor some sort of clue as to what is going on. I've been dealing with this for two years now (I fell at work) and just within the last year or so has the pain because progressively worse. I've had MRI's and bone scans done as well but they don't really offer any information to the doctors. If this test doesn't show anything, I'm not sure what else to do or try.

Just Looking....Have you had a discogram? About 12 y/o I was in a car accident and went to several doctors; had several tests but to no avail. They couldn't find anything that could be causing my pain other than scolosis. And they said that scolosis shouldn't be making me hurt like I was. I had PT, injections etc.etc.etc My husband got really upset and took me to LA and I saw a well-known YOUNG doctor that sent me to one of the OLDEST doctors in New Orleans and he did the discogram and immediately saw the problem. My disc was blown out. I even saw it while I laid on the table. The dye went right to the course. Not a painful procedure either. New Orleans doctor sent me back to the orthopedic doctor and did a very non-invasive surgery if you can call it that. I wasn't all the way to sleep and I was having to answers questions for him. Was a little bit uncomfortable because he did do a small incision. He performed what he called a discectomy; but it isn't your normal everyday discectomy. It was the ones they do on the atheletes
so they can recover quickly and get back in the game. I was down maybe about 1 1/2 wks. Anyway, in my case it took the knowledge of the youngest doctor around contacting the oldest doctor around to get me fixed and find the problem. LOL LOL

Don't be so worried, please don't get yourself worked up anymore than necessary. Do try to do things to take your mind off of your back if you can. Get yourself a glass of iced tea w/lemon and go watch the kiRAB play hide n seek. LOL Really you'll be ok. And I'm lifting you up right now as I type this. If you need us we are always here. Feel free to come back and visit and let us help you get through this. Take care.

A CT Myelogram is actually a lurabar puncture. They will put a needle into your spinal canal and inject dye into it. They watch the flow of the dye through the canal , and the nerves to check for stenosis ( compression of the spinal cord itself or the nerve roots).
It's actually pretty quick ( the myelogram part), then you are taken to the CT scanner and they do a scan. It takes about an hour total for the procedures.
You have to rest for anywhere between 2-4 hours after the myelogram flat. Then for the next 24 hours, either lay down with your head on two pillows ( about 20 degrees) so you don't get a spinal headache afterward.
Hope this helps,
Sandi

I am scheduled for a ctmylogram next week, and I am curious too-well more apprehensive. My last lurabar fusion was in Sept. 08 and at this point right now I seem to be getting worse instead of better. I am very frustrated.
