sunny Exactly!
It is one thing to really love someone and be together on equal terms but they had not known each other for that long either and all of a sudden he changes, does a 180 and becomes a saint?? She gives him her virginity out of love and they part on the best of terms?? I mean, not only is it crazy to have people change like that but they were KIDS! (The director talks about this in the DVD commentary which I found pleasing in the sense that he at least admitted that some of it was far fetched) The level of maturity of somebody like Sebastian would need more time to develop deeper subtleties.
I don't buy it. Never have. The best character WAS Kathryn (and Mrs. Caldwell) and she deserved a better ending. By a better ending I don't mean, "happy", no way. But she should've gone in style, not in a mess of tears like some bleeding heart.
And the thing about everyone finding out she used drugs... The kind of parents she had wouldn't have cared much besides for the public embarrassment.
Plus, if the movie wanted to be "wicked" and "cruel" ergo the title, then it needed to have the strength to go all out and pit all the personalities against each other in all out fight like they did at the beginning of the movie, which was SO delicious in that sense. Everyone holding their ground and doing a bang up job.
Too bad the story didn't develop smoothly, it didn't develop at all. It leapt over character growth and realization of wrong doing.
Sebastian had it too easy. His journey towards redemption should've been harder, longer and ugly. Then I wouldn't have had SUCH a problem with Annette giving in to her love for him.
***
BTW, I *like* the movie. I'm just saying it's not that groundbreaking, it is traditional and it had so much potential that it KILLS me to see what could've been a great romantic noir film gone over the abyss.

One thing that must be noted is that the DVD commentary is both hilarious and amusing.
