"Competitor in a sports contest graded according to the likelihood of his or her victory in specific events" - I haven't got a clue but it's "s_ed"

Not great at sports knowledge .......

Its definition is exactly as described in your question. 1st seed is the most likely to win, second seed next most likely and so on. (nb they are not necessarily in world ranking order, for instance in a clay court tennis tournament, clay court specialists may have a higher seeding than their overall tennis ranking would suggest).
 
The answer is Seed. All competitors in nearly graded by what is known as Seeded. You will hear this especially when tennis is played at Wimbledon. They will, for instance mention that a Player is number 2 seed.
