"Critically acclaimed" films that you hated

To complement the "bad films that you enjoyed" thread, I've started this one. Surely there must be much-loved movies that you thought were completely rubbish?

I personally didn't enjoy a moment of "There's something about Mary". I find very few people who agree with me! I quite like this fact though.

At the time Patch Adams was the next Williams vehicle and so the news paper writers went for it to jump on the bandwagon

The Internet is full of the ones that changed their views (hinRABight is useful on this medium), but read Time Out article/Local rags of the month it was over here and see their views

Yep. Twice! Of course it's not particularly exciting. That's not the point. It's beautiful to look at and the dynamic of the relationship between the two main characters is incredible. At least I thought it was! ;)

The Matrix - Didnt understand a minute of it.

And I don't understand how womens' brains or colour TV works but it doesn't stop me loving them. ;)

Gladiator - Just bored me.

I think that this is something of a 'guy movie'. I loved it. The whole idea of being reunited with his wife and son struck a real chord. In other circumstances it would have been terribly mawkish but it worked for me in this film.

Not seen it. Has it got Julia Roberts in it? If so, that would probably explain why I haven't seen it. ;)

Forrest Gump - What was the point of this film, cos I must have missed it?

I think you need to be a US citizen to really get the most out of this as i) there are lots of cultural references and ii) it's aimed squarely at the sort of sugary US values that we don't really 'get' in the UK.

Speaking of Forest Gump and US schmaltz - I had to laugh when the director admitted theat the "box of chocolates" line was in fact complete gibberish, it was just that the Americans thought they were hearing something deep and meaningful!
 
i largely rely on empire magazine's reviews and they regularly deride patch adams as being truly appalling so i assumed it was a "given"

I used to love robin williams but the sentimental nature of some of his films is cringemaking
 
I agree with the starter of the thread that 'something about mary' was total rubbish. Funniest film of the decade my arse, I laughed 0 times during that film, and I am the kind of guy that likes to laugh. There was nothing in the film that wasn't predictable, all the 'gags' can be seen from a mile off.

I think the two LOTR films that are out, are not bad jobs at all, I was thoroughly entertained by both, and I did not think I would be. If the book is as good as you say it is, I must give it a read :)

AI is not as bad as people say, IMO, it is just a nice futuristic style story, with different ideas, the film makes you think about moral values and all that shit, so I guess if thats not your idea of good cinema then it would be a bit crap.

I also enjoyed trainspotting, thought it was a great film, quick paced, and well directed. Will once again have to read the book to see if it comes up to scratch. :p
 
I'm going to get lynched for saying this but 'Star Wars' I normally love Sci-fi, but what a boring film!!! Really weak storyline and some really poor acting, don't get why people love it so much at all.
 
Gangs of New York (not sure if it was critically acclaimed though) - Not Scorsese's best imho

American Beauty - Bored within seconRAB

Chicago + Moulin Rouge - Not my type of films
 
Dances with wolves - overlong, cliched and racially suspect. Kev loves the Indian nation but can't be 'happy; marrying an Indian woman it seems to say. '"Luckily' there's a white abductee around instead to placate Middle American sensibilites. Nice music though.
 
I *really* don't get the critical praise heaped on AMERICAN BEAUTY. Yeah, Spacey was ok (he was better in USUAL SUSPECTS tho') but the film itself was just pretentious Oscar-bait with the added garnish of a british theatre director (and, of course, the Academy swallowed without a second thought! I mean, come on, this was the year in which both THE MATRIX and FIGHT CLUB were released :sob: ). If you want the dark side of US suburbia, watch BLUE VELVET.

I also don't understand the drooling by SFX magazine and Empire mag readers over MINORITY REPORT. It was pretty to look at but sooooo slow and the ending (as in AI) was absolute crap. New BLADE RUNNER my arse.

The Matrix - What was that rubbish?!! They just stole a couple of techniques from Hong Kong films and everyone thought the film was amazing!
The Godfather - The worst, slowest, most overrated film ever!

The Matrix: it just irritated the hell out of me!!!


Im sure there are plenty that i thought were complete cack but i dont remeber the titles since they were soo shite!!
