Criterion DVD

Sorry should have been more specific, I meant The Game directed by David Fincher. Fincher's other movies ( Seven, Fight Club) are all 2 disc special editions and I have heared The Game is to be released by criterion. Any info?

I'll just use this topic.

Does anyone know if the blu ray criterion edition of Repulsion, from America, will work on a British blu ray player? and if Passion of Joan of Arc will be getting a blu ray release? or will it not make a difference for this film?

Cheers.

I have Repulsion - its a great disc.

Unfortunately Criterion are the only US Bluray company who region code every single title they release.

The normally region free Paramount licenced Benjamin Button to Criterion for the US release but it was still locked to Region A.

Their disc of The Third Man is equally awesome.

Not gone for the Curtis yet then ?:)

You should because even though Repulsion will eventually come out in the UK it wont be accompanied by Criterions trademark bonus features

However - you could just buy the Criterion dvd version

I was thinking of getting the dvd or blu ray because I want in on Criterion only. I don't like buying things off Ebay(unless there are official shops selling on it?) and that seems to be where you get these Curtis players?

I have a friend who is going into Richer SounRAB near where he is, and he is going to ask them if they still do the blu ray multiregion hack on their Sonys and so on. If not, I'll look into the Curtis.

Make sure your friend checks that the RS hack is for Bluray too.
I would imagine all their players will be MR for dvd.

The Curtis was available from a supermarket but I cant remember which one.

With players under

Asda use to do it but can't find it there now.

What about the Tevion:

Will the above play any region blu ray via a code hack? if so, I might take my chance on this.

Are these already blu ray region free, or have to go put a code in yourself? if so, is it the once like with dvd players, or everytime you want to play a different region?

Oh just been reading stuff, is it true that cheaper players might not be able to be upgraded? and therefore not playing future blu ray dvd releases... that's rather odd, what makes future blu ray releases not able to work on certain machines...

I've read quite a lot of negatives about the Curtis, apparently A LOT of people had to return them, and that's one reason places like Currys stopped selling them.

Have you actually used the Curtis?

I bought the Tevion one, and it can play different region blu rays according to people who have bought it, so will be setting it up over Christmas. :) It wasn't the price on the website either, in the shop it was

So far its been hogwash.

There are 3 Bluray profiles.

Profile 1 applied to early players
Profile 1.1 added the ability to access the bonus features that used Picture In Picture.

Profile 2 can link to the internet to access BD-Live which means that you can watch some additional extras with certain discs but up to now with a couple of exceptions BD-Live seems to be a waste of time and most companies do not know how to make it worthwhile.

So if you have a Profile 1.1 player you can watch the PIP features that a Profile 1 owner cannot.

My Panasonic is 1.1 but having used the PS3 with BD-Live it was not worth the effort.

So the scaremongering exaggerates the fact that depending on what Profile player you have you may not be able to play all the bonus features on a disc.

Up to now - differing profiles has not lead to any problems with playing the actual movie.

As you know , most Blurays can overlay the menu over the image during movie playback and this is also something that a Profile 1.0 player cannot do.

The PS3 connects wirelessly to the net , whether standalones need an ethernet connection I'm not sure

See, all I'm bothered about is the film and certain features like Makings of and so on. I don't care about the Live/Internet/menu over the film play/or certain bonus features, so really it wouldn't make a difference to me I see.

Good to hear. :)
