Cricket to Launch Android Phone

HAHAHA, this page isn't a joke. If they release anything someone could get fired and a big lawsuit. And they do go to HoFo for up to date new. (Facedrop.) :goodness::goodness::goodness:

HTC Legend uses the same processor and it seems to be getting good reviews.
I plan on picking one up, but we will have to wait and see the final product I guess.

I saw the engadget video and the performance looked pretty bad. In the Cnet video the performance looked better.
And intomobile says:
"We had a chance to play with the Kyocera Zio and I wasn’t expecting much from it, but I walked away pretty impressed.
The hanRABet feels pretty good in the hand: it’s light, sleek and has just enough screen real estate to make the whole thing work."

Since all these took place at the same show..... who knows why engadget hated it, and the others thought it was ok?

1 good thing the phone has going for it, is it is using straight android. Kyocera isn't adding thier own skin, so upgrades should be easier to get.

My 2 biggest questions are (since this is crickets first smartphone).

1) Will Cricket handicap it in someway? remove android market and only allow crap apps from some Cricket store. I can think of many ways Cricket can screw its customers tryign to nickel and dime them.

2) How will Cricket and android updates work. With no custom skin you'd think it would be easy to just pop the 2.x update on it. But with Cricket....who knows?

Cricket Ave- I thought that the Zio did not have the Android 2.1 yet?

I checked out the specs, both of the phones state they have a 600 mhz processor. But maybe one is faster than the other? My HTC Touch Pro has a 555 MHZ processor and it runs pretty well, its just Windows Mobile that makes it kinda lock up sometimes. I can't afford as HTC Evo like I would love to have, so I guess I can try out the Ascend and see if I like it. I just hate Crickets policy of if you go over 30 minutes talk time, you cant return the phone, that seems such a short time period. I wonder what happens if after 30 minutes your phone just freezes or has a lot of issues. Will they just say 'Too bad" ? I dont nessasarlly NEED Android OS. I used it with the Hero and it was great, but I think that phones nicer than this one. I was looking at the HTC Touch Pro 2 also, which seems a stable phone on Windows 6 But it would be actually more expensive used on Ebay than a brand new Ascend.

Yeah, the DigInfo (I guess that was it), was the video that I saw that really got me going to. It was horrible before that! But, Kyocera did say that they were still developing it or whatever, so I guess that must have been true! I'm really eager to see the cost of this phone after the rebates. We've heard they were taking the free month away, which I'm guessing explains the drop in MSRP from $299 to $249, but after that I don't think we have details on rebates yet. I'm hoping the phone is $200 or less. It should be. :)

That is awesome for you, but I think Cricket still has the upper hand for most with Ulmt Talk/Text. With my wife's plan on cricket it's cheaper because she is constantly on the phone. Also text messaging...wow...don't even get me started there :) $40/Month unlimited everything, say add the Zio or Blackberry service (which she already wants) would be maybe an extra $15? 55/month. Plus if we prepay 3 months we get one free which works out to paying for phone service for 9 months. So let's say at that rate it would still be an average of 41.25/month and I never have to worry about her going over minutes or texting with no contract.

Can't wait for the Zio, I might actually do this myself!

There is NO multi-touch function thats why it "feels" poor in comparision to other Android devices. COME ONthis thing was touched by Keocera...do i need to say more. Has ANYONE every used a Keocera product that was Quality or a good phone??? if so please share you experiance for everyone here!

Browsing is fine, but some apps over the Internet aren't usable. I can't use Tikl(Chirp) over the phones net, I must be on Wifi to use it.

I'm on the HTML plan with a Hero.

meh...its still a Kyocera tho....retail price for the BB is $299 then $20 online discount then $50 mail in rebate price after is $299 plus tax...note that the $20 discount is online only, so if u go in the store and buy they will charge u the full retail price of $299 pus tax...not really a good deal in my eyes..

So, by your rational: If you are developing a device and the current version is 1.6 and by chance into your development cycle, 2.1 comes out you should just axe everything at that point and start again with 2.1?

I've had the Zio for three days now. I walked right into a corporate Cricket store here in Cincinnati and they had some in stock - the rep told me they initially got four, and then got eight earlier in the day. So supplies right now are limited.

Overall I like the phone, but do have a couple of minor quibbles:

The screen isn't as touch-responsive as I'd like it to be, compared to an iPod Touch.
Battery life isn't that great.
I don't like how the keyboard pops up when you go to read a text. Haven't found a way to turn that off.
Speaking of the keyboard, it's way too crammed in portrait mode. If you've got wide fingers (I don't...), it'll be a nightmare typing.

This is the first time I have owned a "smartphone", and overall it's not a bad phone, given its limitations.

I've got a guy I can call. I've recently decided I'm going to be getting the Zio instead of a flashed HTC so I just called him up and asked if I can get any info on him. Regrettably, most of my contacts are in the sports world, not cellular technology. :[

I checked out the Zio at a Sprint store and they have it running Android 2.1. Android 2.1 isn't on the Zio on Cricket yet.

I read that the Zio has a better processor. If you compare them on PhoneScoop you might find the difference.

The phone does come with a warranty. If it stops working over the 30 minutes and 30 days that's all I can recommend. You might want to be careful with it at first to be sure you want to keep it.

Yea I tried out both at the store last night, Im not sure how much I like the Ascend. Typing on it seems really weird. It doesn't seem to have any preemptive text like the Hero does. I made a lot of spelling errors when trying to type on it. I really liked the Hero when I had it with Sprint. I wonder if I should just buy one of those on Ebay and use it. Do you know how difficult it is to activate a Hero on Cricket?

I have the HTC Hero keyboard on my Zio. There are instructions on how to install it and the file to install online. I use both Shapewriter and the Hero keyboard (and a Korean keyboard) for different things. Shapewriter is better for writing text messages or other complete sentences and paragraphs. The Hero keyboard is better for search boxes or typing urls in the browser.

How do you chaose which keyboard to use for diff things? Can you set a certian keyboard just for the TXT messages, and another for the browser you use, ect?
