When you buy a new phone and they transfer the ESN, what happens with the old phone?

My GF's friend wants to buy her Audiovox 8910 (amazing...i know). I dont want to let it go until I can see it wont make any calls from her nuraber. How can i reprogram the phone to just be a phone with no service until cricKet reprograms it with a new nuraber?
 
Once the phone nuraber is transfered to a new ESN the old ESN is unauthorized and can't be used to make or recieve calls until registered with a new nuraber. The change is immediate, I have done it many times. You don't need to reprogram it, just go to the security menu, items 5 and 6 to erase all the personal data and reset the phone.
 
the only thing i have heard of is that it might still get VM notifications. this happened to me when i did an esn swap. it won't be able to call the VM, so you have nothing to worry about unless you don't want them to know you have voicemail.
