crave dirt when pregnant?!? weird i know?

so when i was pregnant.. towards the end.. i craved things like dirt, the smell of comet, and craved ice all of the time. now my sister is pregnant, due in a few weeks and she is having the same cravings. anyone know what this is? i googled it some and found that other women had the same cravings but didnt really find out what caused it.

My Dr. told me some women crave ashes (from cigarettes, gross, I know) and chalk. It just happens.
