Cover Song Suggestions

Right, so I have about 250 plus songs in my solo arsenal so to speak but I want to get more. I know that there are a miriad of songs but I am looking for the big ones that I might be missing. I want songs that are relatively easy - more singer/entertainment than complex guitar work so no Stairway or Wipeout. Ha, speaking of Wipeout, my drummer sent me a link the other day to a funny site that had stuff for musicians. They had a "No Wipeout" sign like a no smoking sign. Man, there was another one that made me laught my butt off . . . I am gonna go look up the link. Ah yeah, the shirt had a handicapped sign with a guitar player sitting in the wheelchair with the word "Guitarded" on the side. Ok, so not exactly PC but I think it's hilarious. They had one for the drummer too. I found it, it is "musictshirtsetc" I thought I might send one of those handicapped drummer shirts to my drummer BUT I DIGRESS!

Any help on those cover songs would be great. I do have Brown Eyed Girl :) I am trying to get as many cover songs as I can.

Thanks Foks,
Acoustic

how about examples of what you already play?

what are the top picks people want to hear you perform? while there are myriad suggestions that could be made, there are just as many that could be made within close relation to where you're already at.

also, the lyrics to the theme from Gilligan's Island apparently fit over the music for Stairway to Heaven like they were written for each other. might be worth keeping in the back of your mind.

Probably one of the most fun songs to play live, but it's real hard to find drummers competent enough to pull the fills off.

Great help so far guys! Keep them coming!! That Gilligans Isle thing is funny. I will have to try it :)
Littleknowitall . . . great list man. What else you got??

When I was the bass player in a band last year we covered Smells Like Teen Spirit by Nirvana, it's actually really easy and fun to play.

My friend actually covered A Thousand Miles by Vanessa Carlton.
He re-did it totally, but it sounded pretty chill.

duuuuuuuude

I've been trying to find that album forever. I only have Yank Crime

It's not awful but the reason that song gets me going is that thumping bass line at the beginning of the song. It's got great pop hooks so yeah it transfers to the singer/song-writer style decently, but I think there are more worthy candidates...

i think i'm getting thoroughly fed up with singer songwriters laming the crap out of punk tunes because they 'transfer' well. of course they effing transfer well! they're simple songs with simple generic chord progressions for the most part. so that the band could focus ENERGY through their music as opposed to pits of desperate attention seeking through the guise of sensitivity.

where's the fire? the oomph! the intangibles that push a simple 2-3 chord song into something that ignites the soul and provokes reaction within the listener?

please OP don't make the same mistake of missing the point of your source material with your choice of covers.

sorry for the derail.

if you want to try something really interesting i'd suggest covering 'Only Shallow' by My Bloody Valentine.

I think the best covers are when the banRAB make there songs there own. I'm aware we are talking about Singer- Songwriters here but here's a band who did a great job of completely changing up this classic punk song.

These guys took a sogn and made it their own, they most likely didn't have the same intentions the Minutemen had when they wrote this song but they nailed it.

I don't see whats wrong with covering a punk song and changing it up a lot, sure you can say that it was written the way it was to make it easier to play on stage and have a presence, but when covering a song it's up to you what you want to do with it.

And Fugazi's songs are most certainly not simple. But I see what you're getting at.

If you want to do something else a little different you could try this;
