Countries with the best animation

This thread is to express which country has superior animation then another one and which one you feel is best.

I personally think that anime is the best out of all other pieces of animation from any country. They put more feeling and more of an interesting plot into most of their work, has more diversity, and most of it targets a more mature audience which makes it have more realism.

Of course this doesn't mean that I hate animation from other countries. American animation consist of good works like Avatar and JLU. But most of my favorite pieces of animation are anime.

EDIT: A choice that's very important that I forgot to put down in the poll is Canadian Animation. If you feel that Canadian animation (or any other country that you like) is better just vote ''Other'' in the poll.

I don't mind some outsourcing with some animation, but I prefer domestic animation, done right here in the United States. I still don't know what the issue is with developing homemade quality animation, but I think animation studios need to give very serious thought about that. Any kind of animation, hand-drawn or computer developed, we need to keep it in the U.S., and as far as drawing the characters are concerned, in my opinion, artists don't really need to cut corners or take short cuts- they all just need to take their time and use patience in drawing the characters. Animators can now use any kind of budget for their works, but use a reasonable budget. Now, for the sound effects, why not digitally remaster them, so they can continue to be used. I know I'm thinking old school, but guess what, the old school style is still good, nowadays.

Technically, the country with the best animation is South Korea. :rolleyes2:

In all seriousness, I guess I like older anime the best. You know, the kind that could pass for American animation. Remember Grimm's Fairy Tales? Anime. :anime: Older Miyazaki (Pre-Ghibli formation) stuff is great, too. Castle of Cagliostro and Panda Go Panda come to mind.

I prefer American cartoons, though ironically enough, many of them are animated overseas, so I'm not really sure how to vote. I just know that the Anime style doesn't really appeal to me. I've seen some that I enjoyed, like Street Fighter II: The Animated Movie and I watched Voltron when I was a kid, but for the most part I'm just not into Anime and prefer American style much more.

My vote is for Japanese animation due to the sheer volume and variety of styles and subject matter. American animation is my next choice, followed by European animation--I can't really seperate British, French, and Italian from each other myself. They really seem to only differ in writing styles to me and all three have excellent examples (Britian has the Bachelor toons, Danger Mouse, and Wallace and Gromit, France has stuff like Code Lyoko, Dragon Hunters, and Totally Spies, and Italy has Monster Allergy, Winx Club, and Huntik. Korea deserves a mention, though it usually is somewhat like anime and India does have some good stuff, too.

I don't see the point in separating British and French animation; they don't produce much on their own and should probably be European animation. There's also Canada

But anyway, Japan. Just the variety, effort, and love that goes into each show is nice. It seems most people here just treat it as a paycheck and it's all the same kind of shows (children's comedies, adult sitcoms, superheroes) with no real originality.

Beyond that, looking at the Western stuff I like, I'd probably say European. In my time, I really only consider 5 Western shows worth watching: 1 American, 1 Canadian, and 3 French. Coincidentally (or not) they're all heavily anime-influenced shows (the good kind of anime influence, beyond mere art style aping stuff like Teen Titans or Totally Spies)

I'm ashamed that I've forgotten Canadian animation, given how much the country produces with the help, of course, of their government. I would probably put Canada third on my list. Perhaps U.S. and Canada should be grouped together as North American animation.

Definitely American anination. I find that animation done in my home country has the most variety in terms of actual style, with cartoons made in the USA featuring both realistic and exaggerated designs, and everything in between. The only other real competitor to the US - Japan - seems to be stuck in a stylistic rut IMO, with the majority of TV series made there featuring very similiar designs.

If I was still 12 I would probably vote Japanese animation, but now I'd vote for America. True, a lot of it is actually animated oversees, but for the gist of it I like the varying styles American animators can create. I'm with defunctzombie with the older style Japanese animation, or at least the anime styles that aren't all the same.

But as far as story goes, anime was one of the first to really get me interested in the heart of creating a series, how not just money but love and dedication and emotion has to go along with it (along with Disney and a lot of Studio Ghibli films). So yeah, America and Japan would be my top two.

I'm gonna play Devil's advocate and say that it's kind of silly to say which country has the best animation. To me, they all have their highlights (US-The Lion King, France-Persepolis, Japan-Spirited Away, Russia-Hedgehog in the Fog, Britain-Wallace & Gromit, etc.)

Besides, there's a certain bias in this decision given that most people will have seen their own country's animation much more in comparison to the stuff they've seen from other nations.

They all look pretty varied to me.

MOD Note:

I'm going to ask you guys that since this is a sensitive topic (we've had it before and not always it has ended well), everyone please explain their choices and keep the possible flamebaiting to a minimum (read: none). No lines have been crossed yet, but this is a fair warning given the topic. Any violations after this post will be handled with [strike]iron fist[/strike] proper infractions.

Carry on now.

I've never seen the point of this particular question because it's not like each individual country has only 1 animation studio with only 1 set animation and drawing style. As shown in some of the posts above, they are all varied and diverse, so I think it's kind of silly to claim that 1 country has inherently better animation than any and every other.

In the end, all that matters to me is whether I'm entertained by the cartoon in question or not. It's country of origin isn't important to me.
