Countdown - so much better these days!

Used to be a "must-see" programme for me. Now watch it very occasionally, as today, but wonder why I bothered. The new "team" seem to be doing a job, whereas Carol and Richard ( and also Des O'Connor) seemed to be there because they enjoyed it - if that makes sense.
 
Anyone watching Countdown this week? Jan Parker is an interesting contestant, she of the bizarre Rapunzal-like hair and slightly plastic face! A worldwide rock singer, she looked great back in her punk days.

Indeed. the series producer is Damian Eadie, who was Countdown champion back in the mid-90s. Longtime viewers may remember him in dictionary corner before Susie took on the job permanently.

Those particular nines were a very common set of letters. Someone like Damian would know that NOTARISES = SENORITAS = ASSERTION. He'd only need to spot one to get the other two.

I should probably declare an interest here, in that I was a contestant in the last series and am an avid countdown nerd.

The Daily Mail's stories are a load of bollocks. The low ratings they refer to occurred on the warmest day of the year so far, when all tv shows experienced a ratings dip. Countdown had lower numbers that day, but the same audience share. They also harp on about how Richard and Carol used to get 5 million viewers, ignoring the fact that this figure was achieved in a much better timeslot.

Also, Rachel is pretty damn good at the numbers. She beat me on all three numbers games the other day and the numbers was one of my specialities when I was on the show.

The only thing is, there's no place in the audience where you get a good view of the letters and numbers boarRAB (because of a bunch of cameras), you have to use the monitors if you want to play along (or pen and paper which are provided...)
 
I was considering applying to go on Countdown, but when Rachel started I knew there was no way something would come out.

'Nice ass Rachel' or 'Can't you drop a tile and bend down to pick it up'.

Methhinks they would kick me off the show.
 
I surprised myself too and found the nine letter word almost immediately because for once, it 'looked' like the word and it surprised me how long it took for the contestant to find it!
 
Yes you're correct I shouldn't call people simpletons because of their viewing choice so I apologise unreservedly.

The show itself has no redeeming features so I have no qualms about criticising that, it is repetitive, requires zero skill and worst of all is completely contrived. The most annoying part is when somebody finishes early and they then run through the rest of the show uncovering boxes as if it matters (rather than filling time), almost as bad is the way the other contestants apologise if their box is bad as if it's anything to do with them what's in there. (I only managed a couple of episodes so it may have changed since then though the brief glimpses I had don't suggest this - I can't believe it is still going).

By contrast Countdown is a real test of skill and one that you can play at home.
 
Good contest today (tues) with both players getting over a 100 points, I haven't seen that for a while.

Rachel's ensemble was disappointingly restrained and demure, this will just not do at all.

We need outfits a lot shorter and a lot tighter.
 
I do like the new Countdown, and it's definitely better than it has been since Richard Whiteley's death. My only problem is that I'm now crapper at it because I find that instead of looking at the letters, I just stare at Rachel Riley's arse.
