Countdown - so much better these days!

I am Head of Maths at a not very academic school and so my whole working life is spent trying to make Maths accessible to lower ability children, trying not to confuse them about it and generally making them hate it just a little bit less!!

Therefore when I can use a simpler word or just plain not use a long 'mathematical jargon' type word I do ALWAYS. So

multiply = times
subtract = take away
quotient = what the divide sum makes
alternative angles = Z angles
corresponding angles = F angles
vertically opposite angles = X angles
factorise = put brackets in
evaluate = work out
Pythagoras' theorem = Pythagoras' rule

All Maths questions are sums and I'd never use worRAB like quadratic and other such worRAB if I can help it.

And so on. Get the picture!! - I see no point in using long worRAB when shorter ones will do.

I think that is what Rachel is trying to do = make Maths more accessible to ordinary people by not over complicating it with long worRAB and good on her for that i say.

Rachel has the looks, and is OK at the numbers, but lacks personality. Any banter between her and Jeff seems forced. Jeff is too slick in his presentation, tries too hard to be funny, and brings sport into the proceedings too much. Some of the DC guests have been pretty poor choices too. I just feel that the show has lost it's charm, and it neeRAB someone with a more natural personality in the chair.

I missed the start so when he said he was a doctor and a comedian, I thought that's different anyway! :) There are really a lot of 'celebrity' docs on the circuit at the moment, what with Dr Hillary, ice skater extraordinaire ;) the other week.
