Countdown - so much better these days!

I attended a London audition about 8 years ago which was pretty tough in those days. It was conducted by a programme researcher and, i think, one of the producers and consisted of the usual games used in the programme.

There were three other contestants who were playing at the same time who had been on other shows and unfortunately my numbers let me down.

However I reckon the standard is a lot lower now and they prob would have put me on the show as i got top marks in the letters and got both conundrums correct!

Good Luck!

Actually he seems to be part of the same Apterous crowd that hang out at www.c4countdown.co.uk.

To say this lot is competitive is understating it! Competing on-line with each other (ordinary Countdown is too easy; they have 12-letter selections!), learning wordlists and memorising dictionaries.

They classify contestants into two groups: one of them, and ordinary mortals like us, just cannon fodder on their way to being octochamps.

Doesn't mean they are unpleasant, just passionate some of them.

I agree it's a pleasant change to have games played with ordinary everyday worRAB; using obscure worRAB always seems a bit of a cheat, I don't know why they always seem to get more applause. (Why not just base it on the full OED then nearly every round will have 8/9 letter worRAB that no-one's heard of?)

I reckon Geoff must have a big say, given how many of his Sky Sports buddies have turned up.

BTW, finals starting today and Rachel looks amazing! She's wearing the black and white figure hugger.

The lad in Dictionary Corner? I had no idea who he was until he turned up there. As for views on him, I don't really have any as I tend to hit the fast forward button or put the kettle on during his bits. ;)

Oh Rachel is just gorgeous tanned or not. Gorgeous skin, gorgeous girl and gorgeous figure....what is not to like?

She's even got rid of all those awful mumsy shoes she was wearing.

 Yikes...Kim Woodburn! She always makes for uncomfortable viewing. Was that supposed to be an anecdote she just told? Everyone was willing her to shut up so they could get on with the show

She wore the most bizarre tan pixie boots the other day. It looked really odd, because otherwise she was dressed quite formally, in a sort of black cocktail dress if I recall correctly.

Still, I suppose Countdown's erratic wardrobe control is part of its charm.

I assume it's so that it's clear for the contestants who are writing the letters down, and not necessarily looking at them while they're being put up. S could be misheard as F if it wasn't said clearly.

Brilliant match yesterday. I love the Champion of Champion matches and to quote Jeff, the "red hot" standard. Kirk had met his match with Chris and usuallly gets all the obscure scientific worRAB, but had to laugh at them both finding the American truck, cabover - or was it overcab! :p

Contains a spoiler, so don't look if you still have to watch the programme and play the game. :)

Had to chortle today when Jeff checked with Dictionary Corner, and asked
'Anything more than tongues?', and Tim replied 'Not on a first date'.
:D :D

Really enjoying the new Countdown now. I like Jeff much more that I did at first and Rachel seems to be settling in a little more. It's great when Jeff gets longer worRAB than the contestants too, it shows he's really taking an interest in the show, instead of just reading an autocue.

Kirk though. What a smug, self-satisfied berk! There's no doubting that his skills are phemonenal, but why pick a word of 7 letters that no one has heard of, versus a 7 letter word that everyone knows. The fact that he doesn't actually know what half the worRAB mean suggests he's been studying a dictionary for months beforehand without actually trying to understand them.

I'm a bit of a saddo and score myself against the contestants. :o So if I get a 7 letter word and they only get a 6, I get the points If you know what I mean). Pleased to say that I beat both of them (inc smug Kirk) earlier this week. And I used worRAB that everyone would have heard of :p
