3. Interpretation
Analysis based on Description show that minorities’ roll(Who) in Hollywood(Where) has increased(What) for the past decades(When). This result is portraying the subsidiary of racism(Why) in America. Thus, the filmmakers casted more Asian actors and actresses (How) resulting a rather fair distribution in Hollywood’s movies. There were absolutely no minorities during the 1970s but started to emerge during 1980s and increased slightly at 1990s. Nonetheless, it has dropped drastically at 2000s but boosted again at 2010.
There were significant drops during 2000~2009 because most of the movies during that time were ‘Based on a Book’ and the characters had to be originate books or comic books which were written hundred years ago. Another reason would be, significant amount of movies’ story were based decades ago when there were no minorities in the western world. Such movies like ‘Pirates of Caribbean’ or ‘The Lord of The Rings’. Those movies had no other choice since their stories’ backgrounds were based on historical fact. These movies came in series during the 2000s, leaving no room for other movies. In 2010, minorities’ roles have increased to 24.2%, which is almost close to the race distribution in United States (12.8% of African-American, 15.1% of Hispanic and 5%of Asians). Such phenomena can be explained by the election of the black president Obama. Just like the Martin Luther King had said “The arc of history is long but it’s leaning towards justice”. <Martin Luther King>
There were absolutely no minorities in 1970s. It was too conservative for non-white actors to work in Hollywood. Racism was still very popular and there was no law to protect the minorities. At 1980s things began to change as Beverly Hills cop, starred by Eddie Murphy were a huge hit. Although it was still stereotypical to set Eddie Murphy came from Detroit, he had a very unique style and a talent. As a result the film gained 316mil$ with 15mil$ with lots of sequel and re-makes. In 1990s Will Smith got 2 role for the main protagonist, official making him the most famous African-American celebrity in the world. He’s skill was recognized by being nominated for 4 Golden Globe and 2 Academy Awards.
